THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 12, 1969-3 Police Arrest 24 at NPD Rally Fight BONN (JTA)—Police arrested at least 24 persons in a mete that broke out here Sunday during an election rally of the ultra right- wing National Democratic Party (NPD) addressed by party leader Adolf von Thadden. Police formed a protective cor- don around the Beethoven concert hall where the rally was held. They dragged out scores of scream- ing left-wing students who heckled von Thadden with jeers and shouts of "seig heil," the Hitlerite salute. One of those arrested was said to be an NPD usher. West German authorities are cracking down on the use of uni- formed "ushers" assigned alleged- ly to keep order at NPD election rallies. The so-called ushers have been involved in riots that broke out at NPD meetings in Frankfurt, where further rallies have been banned, and other cities recently. They have been acused of beating up hecklers and asaulting passers- by. The ministers of interior of the various German state govern- ments have announced a ban on "stewards" who carry sticks and beat up opponents. They acted on the requests of local police chiefs and trade union leaders following the disorders in Frank- furt. The mayor of Darmstadt has banned an NPD election rally there for fear of violent clashes. The city fathers of Offenbach banned an NPD meeting that was to have taken place there Sept. 2. An NPD spokesman blamed trade unions for attempting to hamper cent of the vote in the forthcoming West German national elections and "possibly even more." Von Thadden told a press con- ference that he would be dis- appointed if his party polled only the 5 per cent required to win seatas in the Bundestag. He said he would resign if it got less. According to Von Thadden, the NPD contains no more ex-Nazis than any other West German party. He thought that the riot- ing which has attended many NPD election rallies recently would help rather than hinder his party's chances. In reply to questions, he said the NPD would support Chancelor Kurt Georg Kiesinger's Christian Demo- cratic Union "if it had logical pro- posals that we could support." The NPD wants, among other things, to end the prosecution of Nazi war criminals. The party has also de- manded the return to Germany of the Nazi territories lost in World War II. 3,500 Jews in Athens The Jewish population of Athens is approximately 3,500. Few Jews lived in the city until the beginning of the 20th Century. The 4,000 Jews there in 1939 were joined by an ad- ditional 4,000 refugees from Salon- ica. Some 5,000 survived the Nazi occupation of Greece, which ended in 1944.
