'The Avengers'—S tory of Search for Nazi Criminals

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

A continuing search for the Nazi
criminal Martin Bormann, the
story of the capture of Adolf Eich-
mann, Dr. Josef Mengele's cruel-
ties, the role of other Nazis and
the search that continues to assure
proper punishment for the beasts
of the era of Hitlerism—the story
of the Holocaust is reconstructed
in a volume that deals in the main
with those who seek vengeance
and who are determined to bring
to justice those still at large.
In "The Avengers," published by
Hawthorn Books (70 5th, NY11),
the Israeli journalist Michael Bar-
Zohar, who had already written
the life story of David Ben-Gurion
and another revealing work. "The
Hunt for German Scientists," tells
the dramatic story of Jews who are
doing the hunting and the aveng-

were not even represented at Nur-
erbberg."
He explains that the vengeance
began on May 5, 1945, because for

Jews it did not mean the end of
the war and because Nazis were at
large, and he notes:

"The Avengers' motto in
Europe in 1945 was: 'We shall
kill so that over in Israel they
may build.' Were they right? I
don't know. History will judge
them. I don't believe in revenge.
For myself, as for many of my
countrymen, the only true re-
venge is the creation of the State
of Israel. Israel is what matters
to us. The future. Most of us
are not avengers. But we know
these people. Without identify-
ing with them, we respect these
men, proud of being Jews, who
committed violent acts, of which
they themselves are repulsed, in
the name of a whole nation, to
prevent repetition of the past."

Included among the avengers
was the Jewish Brigade that
fought against the Nazis in World
War H. By including these fac-
tors as well as those of the Re-
sistance, the author completes
his story properly and gives the
term vengeance relevance.

Primarily, it is "The Hunt for
Nazi Criminals" portion of the book
that emerges of greatest signifi-
cance as an indication of a contin-
uing search, as a revelation of
the crimes and of the criminals
who were mainly responsible for
the bestialities.
There is "a warning" in Bar-
Zohar's book—"for those who might
be tempted to revive Nazism." It
is "With Operation Eichmann
(that) the avengers' aim became
to give punishment the character
of a warning."
The author recognizes that not
all Germans are guilty when he

Of Pedro Carolino's "English as

NE'ILAH PRAYER

God, that doest wondrously,
God, that doest wondrously,
Pardon at Thy people's cry,
As the closing hour draws nigh!
Few are Israel's sons and weak:
Thee, in penitence, they seek.
0 regard their anguished cry,
As the closing hour draws nigh!
Souls in grief before Thee poured,
Agonize for deed and word;
"We have sinned Forgive!" they cry
As the closing hour draws nigh!
Heal them! Let their trust in Thee
Turn aside Wrath's dread decree;
Doom them not, but heed their cry,
As the closing hour draws nigh!
For our Fathers' righteousness
Save us now in our distress;
Make us glad with freedom's cry,
As the closing hour draws nigh!

"Its delicious unconscious ridicu-
lousness, and its enchanting nai-
vete are as supreme and unap-
proachable, in their way, as are
Shakespeare's sublimities." And
indeed, it is hard to believe that
Carolino was totally guideless in
his "new guide to the conversa-
tion in Portuguese and English."
Anyone who has attempted to
carry on a dictionary-based dis-
cussion in a foreign language
realizes the difficulties of making
sense. But here is an example of
the inherent difficulties run ram-
pant—resulting in a work of monu-
mental absurdity.
This little volume, ostensibly a
Portuguese - English phrase - book,
now available as a Dover paper-
back, is filled with miraculous stu-
pidities in the form of "familiar
phrases," "familiar dialogues,"
"familiar letters," "anecdotes,"
and "idiotisms and proverbs" in
Portuguese and a unique kind of
English. Its inspired ignorance in-
cludes many pages of familiar
dialogues "for to wish the good
morning," "for to write," "with
the hair dresser," "for to see the
town," "for to visit a sick," and
for many other situations. It also
includes a section of familiar let-
ters, such as the one written by a
"Madam of Sevigne at their daugh-
ter," and anecdotes about such
characters as the English lord who
was "in their bed, tormented cruel-
ly of the gout," and the "sophist
Zenon, the most hardy of all men
at to sustain some paradoxes."

Book knowledge is a mere nui-
sance.Jt may do for an ornament,
but never for a foundation.
