Blind _Priest Made to See

Lessons for Efficient Worrying

Dr. Charles Brain, a leading
British scientist, has made a dis-
covery which I am afraid is go-
ing to cause a lot of worrying
among some people. He says he
has discovered through research
that worrying is one of the best
things for you.
The British scientist says that
the reason Israel and Lebanon are
the most progressive countries in
the Middle east is that the Judao-
Christian religions encourage anxi-
eties while Islam tends to alleviate
them. We have some misgivings
about the last statement. We grant
that Jews do plenty of worrying.
but this cannot be said of the Hasi-
dic branch. Hasidism has always
been very strongly opposed to
worrying.
The Lehkovitzer rebbe said that
the only worry permissible is to
worry about worrying.

and make some progress by worry-
ing. Perhaps we could carry a
notebook with suggestions for little
worry snacks.

By some such method, one could
decide upon which worry to con-
! centrate. Having discovered that,
one should give it their best. Real-
ly sit down and worry properly
about it. And after you have wor-
ried it out, your mind becomes re-
freshingly free, no doubt.
Another thing. We have instant
coffee. Why shouldn't we have in-
stant worry? Often we sit around
doing nothing. How much better
it would be to employ ourselves

In June 1967, about 1,000 Jewish
residents of Egypt were jailed
without trials. At the same time,
all Jews living in Egypt were strip-
ped of all civil liberties.

The Hasidim states there is no
reason for worry. Once a mer-

who has arisen in the neighbor-

"Did you ever notice?" asked the
rebbe. "a horse approaching a pool
of water to drink. It stamps its foot.

It has seen its shadow in the pool

there is plenty of water in the

Baptists For Is rael — 79 to 3

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

right

The people Yes! Wrote Carl
;and burg.
The people are with
A, cording to the New York
fines, a poll taken of pastors of
he Southern Baptist church shows
79 per cent in favor of Israel in
he present Middle East struggle:
fly 3 per cent favor the Arabs
:Ind the other 18 per cent appar-
.ntly did not respond to the poll.
The Southern Baptists are the
prgest single Protestant denomi
cation in the country.

The Baptists have a great tra-
dition of freedom. It was the
Baptists who helped Thomas
Jefferson enact the bill for re-
ligious freedom in Virginia, which
later, in substance, was put into
the Constitution of the United
States. Some of the other sects
were opposed to it.
Jefferson was so proud of this
bill that he asked that it be men-
tioned on his tombstone. (He
didn't care to have his Presi-
dency mentioned on his tomb-
stone.)
There are some 11,000,000 mem-
bers of the Southern Baptist
church, quite a sizable element of
the people.
The Arabs may have greater sup-
port in the United Nations where
the greater number of Arab dele-
gates can make political deals and
exert greater influence with poli-
ticians in power in France and
other countries. But the people are
on Israel's side. In France this
has been plain for some time. In
Holland, there were recent mani-
festations of the widespread sym-
pathy for Israel. But in England,
the powerful British Broadcasting
Corp. seems to many to slant its

without checking their accuracy.
Lincoln said you can't fool all of
the people all of the time, but the
BBC may think it can.
Even in Communist countries,
there is strong support for Israel. I
Roumania recently signed a treaty
with Israel. And, in Russia, there
is evidence of grass roots sympa-
thy for Israel. The Arabs have to
thank the fact that there is no '
freedom of speech in Russia, so
this feeling can't show itself.
If it weren't for the Russian
government's suport, Nasser and
the rulers of Syria and Iraq
would have to sit down and make
a real peace. And then instead
of trying to liberate the Arab
world from Israel, they could
liberate the Arab world from
their own autocratic rule. All of

Why are the people of the world
for Israel? It is a peculiar phe-

nomenon. Jews in the past have

not been too popular; but sudden-
ly Israel is popular. There are
many reasons. One of them, I

think, is that the world enjoys it
when a little fellow stands up to a
much bigger one. That gives every-
one a kind of lift. It gives the man
who thinks he is weak, a feeling
that maybe he is not so weak after
all. Secondly, I think there is the
feeling that Israel is really fight-
ing the battle of the free world.
The free world doesn't like what

Russia is doing in Czechoslovakia.
But nobody does anything about
it. So when Israel stands up and
virtually says to this stupendous
guy, Russia, that it doesn't propose
to yield to it in the Mediterranean,
reports in favor of the Arabs. It the sympathies of the free world
accepts Nasser's claims of victory go out to it.
