BACK IN 1959, Arnold Bitkowski
left his beauty salon in Ferndale to
open the Mr. Arnold's Beauty
School on W. Nine Mile Rd. in
Ferndale ...Today. from the small
amount of money he had borrowed,
Arnold has graduated over 3,000
guys 'n gals, and is looking to open,
his fourth spot. . . . Not only was
Marion Schwartz his first customer'
at the beauty school, but her!
(laughter Lynda (Bronson). was
his first student and is presently ,
acclaimed as one of the finest
cosmetologists in California. . . .
Arnold became disgusted at the
lack of competently trained hair-
stylists,but unlike so many people
who just talk about it, he did
something to help alleviate the
situation Mr Arnold's Beauty
Schools are nationally known and
many of his graduates all over the
world are, like Lynda. earning top
salaries. . . . Arnold Bitkowski
had a dream . . . one that became
a reality on Dec. 30. 1959, and
today has grown beyond all ex-
pectations.

S SGT. MEL SHAPIRO, son 'of
Rose and Jack Shapiro. returned
home last week after completing
his four-year enlistment in the air
force. . . . Mel left Chanute Air
Field in Illinois. May 17, 1968, and
spent 16 months out of the states.
FRAYDA STERNS had her car
smashed in an accident and needed
daily transportation to work. . . .
She called the Southfield Cab Co.
and arranged for pick-up each
morning for the entire week—or
so she thought. ... After a couple
of days, Frayda went outside on
Greenfield in front of the North-
gate Apts. and waited—but no cab
came. . . . Seeing a gent doing his
jogging exercise. she said that if
he was going home soon, to plea-4'
call for her and get the cab. . .
The fellow, a total stranger, kept
right on jogging with his head
down and nodding slightly while
passing by . . But Frayda's cab
came—he didn't forget to call!

CALLING MARK BELTAIRE of
the Free Press. . . . Remember
back in 1953 when you were master
of ceremonies for the Louis Stone
Bnai Brith Lodge's installation of
officers with Al Boeskey • its first

president? . . . You introduced

Walter Fuller. then fraternal edi-
tor of the Detroit News, as the
"Imperial Potentate" of the Shrin-
er Order . . . Fuller, who not too
long since had been elected Illus-
trious Potentate, got a' laugh from
the capacity-crowded attendance at
Bel-Aire Caterers when he started
off by saying. "The newspaper
down the street is wrong again."

SIDNEY ROSEMONT actually
purloined a sign from a small hotel
in Illinois that reads. "Do not take
lady friends up the back stairs.
They have just been painted." ...
Sidney, who maintains a fervent
hobby of collecting signs, has a
notice that was posted up near the
newsstand of an inn at Rochester,
Minn. (home of the Mayo Clinic)
that begs, "Please do not discuss
your operation in the lobby." .. .
Insurance man friend Maurice
Manuels tried last week to get him
what certainly is the most elegant
piece of sign language extant to-
day in a Chicago hotel adorning
the bootblack stand by the Morri-
son. . .. The sign (which Maurice
failed to get) read, "Your pedal
habiliments artistically lubricated
and illuminated with ambidextrous
facility for the infinitesimal re-
muneration of thirty-five cents per
operation."
