UN 4 - 4628, or the Israel Bond of- fice, 352-6770. held in the "Scharer Auditorium" of the DETROIT FEDERATION OF MUSICIANS 19161 One reason given is that this is suppos-ed to be a reminder to all future generations including our own of the miracles which the Almighty provided for His people during their perilous journey as a symbol of His divine providence and concern for the children of Is- rael (Nahmanides). A similar reason is advanced by other com- mentaries (Rashi) to the effect that this accounting was given to show that in spite of the fact that the Almighty punished the Israel ites by making them take the long route from Egypt to Israel. He had mercy on them and allowed them to rest at so many stations. Some claim that the reason for the various stops mentioned in the Bible is that any Jewish traveler coming across those places would be obligated to offer a special _ benediction thanking God for hav- . ing performed miracles for his forefathers in these places. From the practical standpoint, of course, the names of the places are given because special episodes of great significance to the history of the people of Israel took place there. Generally speaking, it might be said that the Bible was interested in showing that the change in the historical development of mankind, must be a gradual process of ad- justment and not an abrupt revo- lutionary episode. • • • Why was a small container of the manna which the Jews ate in the wilderness stored in the sanc- tuary of old? Some commentaries claim that this was Bone to serve as a re- minder to the people of the future that the Almighty will always pro- vide a means of sustenance for the human race if they prove worthy. This was done lest some would say that they had no time for the study of Torah or for good deeds because they must give all their time to their trade or busi- ness in order to earn a living. Even if a man should resolve to spend all day in pursuit of his learning, some commentaries point out that the Almighty will always find a way to sustain him. Gener- ally speaking, the appearance of the manna was one of those mirac- ulous events which happened to the Israelites during their travels in the wilderness and as such it was felt necessary to preserve the memory of this great act by the Almighty in behalf of His people. This is considered so relevant for our lives, even today, that many prayer books contain the passage from the Bible describing this event as a reading to be recited in the synagogue every morning after the morning services.
