Labor Day Message

The alienation and hopelessness
of desperate people is at the heart
of "the malaise that threatens to
destroy our society," is the warn-
ing contained in the annual Labor
Day message issued by Rabbi
Solomon J. Sharfman, president of
the Synagogue Council of America

- If, as the Kerner Commission
report predicted, we are moving
perilously and precipitously in the
direction of two societies, one
white, one black, separate and un-
equal, it is largely so because too
many of our citizens have been
totally excluded from the most ele-
mentary benefits that the Ameri-
can way of life has to offer."
Rabbi Sharfman said.

The Council's Labor Day mes-
sage declared that not all Ameri-
cans have a share in the good life.
"There is appalling poverty in our
land: there are families who live in
slums that are a national disgrace;

there are fellow Americans from
whom the respect-giving vitality of
useful employment is withheld. In
city after city, antagonism be-
tween white Americans and black
Americans has fearsomely erupted
into mindless destruction, and is
writing a shameful chronicle that
is a stain upon our land."
"American labor has yet to live
up fully to its own unique responsi-
bilities in doing those things it can
do best: to bring this alienated citi-
zenry back into the mainstream of
American life by giving them a
stake not just in the dream—for
that dream has for too many been
a nightmare—but in the reality of
affluent America. There must be
an expansion of job opportunities
for the disadvantaged. Apprentice-

Jewish Student Activists Seek
a Vibrant 'New Judaism'

By BEN GALLOB .

(Copyright 1969, XTA, Inc.)

A Yale University graduate has
reported that a "new Judaism"
which is "activist-oriented and
communal, rather than middle-
class and congregational," is being
created in many parts of the United
States by young American Jews
disenchanted with the Jewish "es-
tablishment" but determined to find
life-styles within a Jewish frame-
work.
The report was made by James
A. Sleeper, in an article in the
' current issue of "Conservative
Judaism," published by the Rab-
binical Assembly, the association
of Conservative rabbis, and the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
/America.
The report is believed to be the
first in an official publication of a
a major establishment organization
on the growing number of efforts
by such young Jews to create their
own groups, some of them re-
ligiously-grounded, some entirely
secular but all repudiating ties to
the organized Jewish community.

Sleeper, who himself is one of
the activists, said the widespread
discontent and experimentation
among American college activists
in search of new life-styles as
adults has not found its way into
the Jewish community because
"thus far Judaism offers no help
whatsoever to young people strug-
gling along the new frontier of
human relations and self-devel-
opment."
He declared that "if we use the

term 'rabbi' in its best sense as
'teacher,' then it is perhaps Rabbi

were disillusioned with college but
"they stay in college and struggle
for reform there because college ,
has potential and is crucial for
societal change" and they protest
"in the political arena because
America is full of potential and
is crucial for the future of man.
But when it comes to the Jewish !
community, they shrug their shoul-
ders and walk away" because that ,
community has become so identi-
fied with the status quo "that it is
indistinguishable from it."
