Radical Right Is Having a Field Day
Lofman-FarberNuptial:
Exploiting Sex Education Issue—ADL

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEW S
26—Friday, August 29, 1969

Planned for December

Radical right exploitation of the
sex education controversy in pub-
lic schools is explored in a com-
prehensive study issued this week
by the Michigan Regional Office
of the Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith.
That controversy forced the State
Department of Education to hold
six public hearings and to recently
schedule an additional three on the
subject.
"The subject of the paper is not
the issue of sex education, said the

ADL regional director, Richard
Lobenthal. "Many reputable, well-

motivated, sincere and genuinely
concerned people are to be found
on both sides of the sex education
question. The paper is concerned
only with the radical right ex-
ploitation of the issue.•"
"The presence of radical right
groups and individuals in this issue
cannot be denied," said Burton R.
Shifman, Oak Park attorney and
chairman of the Michigan ADL's
advisory board. "Further, even
farther out than the radical right
groups, the hate-mongers have
jumped on this band-wagon for
their purposes," he added.

Miss Lofman is a senior at

"However, the right-wing and
'hate group' involvement shows
very little attempt to deal with
the actual issues involved; and

very little attempt to enter into
evaluative dialogue. Rather,
shouting 'Communist' and other
catch-phrases, they actually pre-
vent constructive examination of
the pros and cons of the issue."
The study notes that the use of

several different names by radical
right groups "confuses the issue."

It describes how individuals are
active in, and sometimes spokes-
men for, several different groups,
!giving the impression of more pub-
lie support than the radical right
campaign actually has received.
Leading the fight is the John
Birch Society, which Lobenthal
called "the goliath of the radical
right." "Birchers and other radi-
cal rightists have found an issue
which has really caught on," Lo-
benthal said. "It provides a rally-
ing point, a recruiting device, a

Lobenthal noted that some of
the attacks are really in the
guise of sex education, but come
from groups and individuals who
have as their ultimate goal the
stated purposes of the abolition
of public education itself. Others
are segregationists who use sex
education as a vehicle for their
purposes.
"It is rather ironic," he said,

"that while many of these groups
have words such as "decency," or
"concern," or "friends" as part of
their title, their tactics include
some of the worst totalitarian tech-
niques known."

When the cooks at the Detroit Baptist Children's Home, 4410 W.

can be a problem. This year, the Maurice C. Zeiger Lodge of Bnai
Brith stepped in. Under the guidance of Zeiger president, David
Levine (on crutches), Max Wayburn, vice president and chairman
(standing beside him) and Metro 69 Passbooks' David Kersh, meals
were provided for the children at Uncle John's Pancake House, Mr.
Tony's, Burger Chef, Red Barn and Super Sub Shops. Wayburn,

the Zeiger Lodge provided Thanksgiving turkey and for Christmas

collected trading stamps, toys and games for the home. The lodge
plans to continue the community project this year.
