Dr. Sidney Friedlaender, chair-
man of the 37th annual Balfour
Concert, announces a kick-off
champagne cocktail party for all
Balfour workers 8:30 p.m. Wednes-
day at the Zionist Cultural Center.
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal of Cong.
Ada s Shalom,
who recently re-
turned from six
months in Israel,
will speak on "Is-
rael — Security
Amidst Danger."
Workers' kits will
be distributed.
All Zionist Or-
ganization of De-
troit members
interested in
working on the
Rabbi Segal
concert are in-
vited. For researvations, call the
ZOD office, 353-3636.
The program this year will fea-
ture Leonard Rose, cellist, appear-
ing with the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra. Guest conductor is a
young Israeli, Yuval Zaliouk, who
has performed all through Europe
and is now conductor for the Royal
Ballet in London. This will be his
first appearance in the United
States.
Moderation is a fatal thing. Noth-
ing succeeds like excess.
Jewish Meals
In Rosh Hashana it is the custom
to dip apples in honey as a good
omen for a happy and sweet year.
We suggest that you combine those
two elements to produce a good
strudel. You can serve it as a
last course to a festive meal, or as
a snack. The recipe is for two
medium size strudels.
The Dough
21/2 cups flour
1 cup margarine
1 ,i... tsp. salt
cup water
The Filling
4 tart apples (medium size)
4 Tbsp. sugar
2 Tbsp. honey
3 Tbsp. bread crumbs
2 Tbsp. oil
1/2 cup raisins
cup slivered almonds
1 tsp. cinnamon
1. Prepare the dough—melt the margar-
ine and combine with flour and salt.
Add water and knead lightly. Let it
rest in refrigerator until you pre-
pare the filling.
2. Prepart the filling—peel the apples
and grate them on a coarse grater.
Add all the other ingredients and
mix well.
3. Divide the dough in two. Roll out
two rectangles of about 10 by 15
inches.
4. Put half of filling on each, cover-
ing about one third of the dough—
Roll up, lengthwise,
lengthwise.
like a jelly roll. Fold the edges
under themselves so the filling will
not come out. Prick the top with a
fork or cut some decorative cuts.
5. Bake in a 400 degree oven for about
30 to 40 minutes, or until the top
gets golden brown. You may sprinkle
on the top confectioners sugar, when
the strudel gets cool.
