HUMAN PASSIONS: Justice is one of the basic tenets of Judaism.
The Judges were the first rulers of the ancient Hebrews. They preceded
the Kings. The graphic stories of heroes and their mighty exploits
pictured in Judges . are an important part of folklore and cultural
heritage of the Western World.
In the Western World, justice is pictured as a blindfolded figure.
implying the possibility of miscarriage of judgement. One miscarriage
— regarded as the most sensational in the history of the U.S. Supreme
Court — has now been brought out vividly in a giant novel of 633
pages by Eleazar Lipsky, who, in addition to being a lawyer by profes-
sion and an author of novels and plays, is also active in the Zionist
movement and spends a good deal of his time in delivering public
lectures on matter dealing with Israel. He is chairman of the board
o f the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Mr. Lipsky's novel. "The Devil's Daughter," is based on a scan-
dalous lawsuit in San Francisco in the 1890's. It is a tragic love story
and a romantic historic novel inspired by a true case. It is also a long
mystery story on which the author began to work 10 years ago. Former-
ly assistant district attorney of New York. Mr. Lipsky noted in-
consistencies. and hints of mystery when he first happened ten years
ago to come across the Supreme Court record of the case. The
novelist's curiosity was aroused and he began his research with the
aim of writing a novel.
His research took him to dusty Californian archives where the
documents on this miscarriage of justice had not been touched for
many years. The case involved the murder of a prominent lawyer and
ex-chief justice of the Supreme Court of California and the arrest of
an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and a deputy United
States marshall for this murder. The event was the outcome of one
of the most scandalous divorce cases of the last century which in-
volved prominent personalities of the day.
Mr. Lipsky recalls the case — and the almost forgotten events
which surrounded it—bringing out the human passions and social
and political forces that shaped the murder His novel, published by
Meredith Press. presents with dramatic force the corruption, bribery
and use of power that prevailed in this country in the days of the
self-made multi-millionaires. silver kings and railroad barons. And
he does it in a style which makes excellent and absorbing reading.
Like some of Mr. Lipsky's previous novels, "The Devil's Daughter"
has all the elements for a good American motion picture involving
romance. human lust for power, passions and hatred, search for what
is right — all presented against a background of the American life
of not-so-long ago. One of Mr. Lipsky's earlier novels, "The People
Against O'Hara." is still remembered as one of the best American
films. Spencer Tracy played the principal role. His "Kiss of Death,"
a screen play. was nominated for an Academy Award. "The Devil's
Daughter" has been chosen by the Literary Guild as an alternative
selection. "The Scientists." another of his novels, was a Book-of-the-
Month Club selection.
