WW II Heroism Is Recalled -
on Death of Dr. Leslie Caplan

Dr. Leslie Caplan, a former De-
troit physician and World War II
Legion of Merit awardee, died
Tuesday in Minneapolis, where he
was a practicing psychiatrist. He
was 58.
Dr. Caplan. a graduate of Ohio
State University, served his in-
ternship at Providence Hospital
and was on the staff of North End
Clinic here before joining the army
as a lieutenant in July 1941. He
also shared a practice with his
brother-in-law. the late Dr. Morris
Marks.
Dr. Caplan was flight surgeon
on a combat mission to Vienna
when his B-24 Liberator bomber
disappeared over Yugoslavia, Oct.
13. 1944. Several months later,
Gertrude Marks. Dr. Caplan's sis-
ter. now deceased, learned that
he had been taken prisoner.
From Feb. 6 to April 16. 1945,
Dr. Caplan served as medical of-
ficer for 2.600 American prisoners
of war in Germany.
According to the Legion of
Merit citation issued later by
the President, "Capt. Caplan.
with complete disregard for his
own personal comfort, health and
safety, and in spite of a forced
march of more than 600 miles
during which the men were de-
prived of the ordinary necessi-
ties of life, so discharged his re-

life was lost. Although suffering
from an injured leg. he worked

plaint, encouraging those who

Border Tension Takes Toll

JERUSALEM (JTA) - The ki-
butz movement magazine Hakibutz
reports an increase in use of tran-
quilizers by Beisan Valley resi-
dents, as well as visits to psychia-
trists in the region.
The publication also asserted that
Jewish settlers of the besieged val-
ley are used to the constant recur-
rent bombardments and go to the
dining hall, concerts or lectures
even when explosions can be
