WSU Dept. Head Seeks
Return to 'Responsible
Student Journalism'

W. Sprague Holden, chairman of
the journalism department at
Wayne State University, said he
was "looking forward to the day
when responsible student journal-
ism will be restored to the Wayne
State campus."

Holden, in a letter to the Detroit
News, explained the status of the
South End, controversial student
newspaper, vis a vis the journalism
department. The latter, he said, "is
not, and never has been, responsi-
ble for any student publication.
As the department responsible
for training students majoring in
journalism, "we are not organized
to publish, or even to supervise, a
student newspaper. Our assignment
is big enough without that being
added," he said.
A new publication board ap-
proved by the WSU board of gov-
ernors has jurisdiction over the
school paper.

construction of low-cost senior
citizens housing by non profit
groups.
Abe Cramer of Pottsville, Pa.,
chairman of Bnai Brith's senior
citizens housing committee, pro-
posed that a section of the Housing
Act, providing for government sub-
sidies for ail but 1 per cent of the
interest on FHA-insured mort-
gages covering rental housing for
low-income families. be ear-
marked for housing developments
for the elderly.

Cramer urged this modifica-
tion as a result of funds becom-
ing unavailable this year for
direct government mortgage
loans to non profit groups to
construct senior citizens' hous-

ing projects.
He called construction of such
projects essential for the person,
62 or older, whose moderate in-
come makes him ineligible for
public housing, yet is insufficient
for most private rentals.

The deadline for aliya is Sep-

settle at the site of Neve Ilan, 10

The garin idea of group aliya
seeks to eliminate many problems
of individual aliya. Community
buildings will include a synagogue,
store, nursery, infirmary and rec-
reation hall.
Each family will live in its own
home and will retain private prop-
erty while living within the frame-
work of a cooperative economy.
The garin will start out on an ex-
