Mrs. Kurtzman Feted on 80th Birthday

Mrs. Rachel Kurtzman (center) Israel Bond Woman of Valor, was
special guest at a luncheon hosted by Mrs. Sidney Schwartz in honor
of Mrs. Kurtzman's 80th birthday. Eighty trees were planted in her
Dame by her granddaughters, Mrs. L. Michael Newman (right), wife
of an army captain, and Julie Ann Raskin, who has been living on a
kibutz in Israel for the last year and a half. Donations to various other
causes, including Kfar Chabad in Israel, in support of a medical center.
and to the American Jewish Congress were announced in her honor.
Mrs. Kurtzman has been dedicated to the Israel Bond cause since its
inception: was one of the first women volunteers to be awarded the
Woman of Valor pin; and served as Pioneer Women's Council Israel
Bond co-chairman and as Israel Bond redemption co-chairman. Her
daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Raskin. is at left.

Pioneer Women's All-Day Conference
to Focus on Organization, Education

- Calling its annual all-day confer-
ence for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the
Sholem Aleichem Institute,'Detroit
Council of Pioneer Women an-
nounced it will emphasize the activ-
ities of two major departments,
organization and education.
The conference will be chaired -by
-the council vice president of organ-
ization. Mrs. Gerald Goldberg. and
vice president of education, Mrs.
Victor Ross, Mrs.
Bea Newmark
will serve as sec-
retary.

ship?" Mrs. Milton Weiss, "Pro-
graming for Membership;" and

Following noon luncheon. Mrs.
Phillip Grad of Chicago, a member
of the national board of Pioneer

Women and past president of Chi-
cago Council will discuss "Mem-
bership Commitment to Israel."
Mrs. Grad has served in every
major Pioneer Women office both
on a city and club level. In addi-
tion, she is serving her second year
as president of the Conference of
Jewish Women's Organization of
Chicago. She has made two trips to
Israel; the most recent since the
Six-Day War and will bring an eye-
witness report of the expanded
social services for women, children
and youth which Pioneer Women
provides in conjunction with its sis-
ter organization. Moetzet Hapoalot.
Culminating discussion of her
talk, an evaluation of the confer-
ence will be given by Mesdames
Goldberg and Ross.
All members of Pioneer Women
are invited.

Lord Balfour
Lord Arthur James Balfour, au-
thor of the 1917 Balfour Declaration
which promised a Palestinian home-
land for the Jews. died in 1930 at
the age of 82. An ardent pro-Zion-
ist, he met with Theodor Herzl ,
while prime minister of England in
1902-03.

missed it as "Southern-fried
Chekhov."

Ernest J. Hopkins has
collected some of the more
vitriolic and satiric pieces penned by Ambrose Bierce when he
was a reporter in San Francisco from approximately 1868 to
1886. Two examples:
1. A Bierce obituary notice: "Dr. Muhlenberg, the man who
wrote 'I Would Not Live Always,' has not been required to do SA
He died yesterday after taking a great deal of disagreeable
medicine and changing his physician three times. He tried a
great variety of climates before finding one it suited him to
depart for."
2. Of a legal verdict that displeased him, Bierce noted, "In
the McFarling case the defendant set up a plea of insanity and
succeeded admirably in proving himself a fooL He thereupon was
acquitted by a jury of his equals."

Marriages

STURMAN-ROSEN: In a recent
ceremony at Cong. Shaarey Zedek,
Elaine Judith Rosen became the
bride of Stephen William Sturman.
Parents of the couple are the Irving
Rosens of Ludlow Ave., Huntington
Woods, and the late Dr. and Mrs.
John Sturman of Detroit. Rabbis
Irwin Groner and Milton Rosen-
baum and Cantor Jacob Sonenklar
officiated. The ring worn by the
bride has been used for four gener-
ations of the Rosen family. The
bride wore a Victorian-styled gown
of silk peau de soie, appliqued with
Alencon lace and seed pearls. Tiers
of tulle illusion created the floor-
length veil which was attached to a
Camelot-style headpiece appliqued
in matching lace and pearls. She
carried a bouquet of carnations,
roses and Stephanotis. Beth Rosen
served her sister as maid of honor
and Frances Greenebaum, sister of
the bridegroom, served as matron
of honor. Bridesmaids were Bar-
bara Lacar. Gail Rovner, Caren I
Landau and Sue Ann Rosen. Julian
Greenebaum served as best man.
Ushers were Dr. Martin Sturman of
Connecticut, Gary Zuckerman of
New York. Edward Lerchin, David
Haron and Gary Galens. Included
in the wedding party were the
bride's two sets of grandparents,
the Abraham Rosens and the Sam
Landaus. After a honeymoon in
New York and Bermuda. the couple
will reside in Detroit.
