THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

By BEN GALLOB

Inc.)
The services of the members of
an American Orthodox women's or-
ganization have been enlisted by an
Israeli rabbi for his unique detec-
tive mission carried on over a 20-
year period in many countries on
special assignment from the Israeli
Religious Affairs Ministry.
That mission is to locate miss-
ing husbands of Jewish women and
persuade them to give their aban-
doned wives a Jewish divorce—the
"get." In the absence of such a
"get," the woman is in the status
of an "aguna," a woman who, un-
der Jewish religious law, is barred
from another marriage.
A Jewess may become an "agu-
na" either through her husband's
accidental disappearance under cir-
mumstances in which his presumed
death canont be verified, or through
wilful desertion of his wife.

the rabbinic court in Petah Tikva,

has traveled throughout the world
on his assignment. On a recent
mission to America, he met with
officials of the Women's Branch of
the Union of Orthodox Jewish Con-
gregations to report on his work.
As a result of that meeting, the
Women's Branch offered its serv-
ices in this country and in Canada,
according to Mrs. Wyman Berenson
of Kew Garden Hills, N.Y., a past
president of the Women's Branch
and chairman of its aguna liaison
committee.
Mrs. Berenson cited a report in
an Israeli newspaper on one of
Rabbi Katz's tours of Europe. in
which he visited Italy, Austria.
Belgium, West Germany, Poland,
Britain and France, handling 30
cases assigned to him by the reli-
gious affairs ministry, which under-
writes the costs of the missions.

MISS MARILYN BIEDERMAN

According to the report, Rabbi
Katz induced 15 of the unwilling
husbands to give their deserted
wives a get. Many of them were
found with the help of Israeli con-
sulates, immigration departments
and even local governments which
cooperated to the point of issuing
search orders and arrest orders I
when that became necessary. He
reported that in some cases, he
had to visit prisons where fleeing
husbands were serving long pri-
son terms.
• Rabbi Katz was asked whether
