Rabbis Opposed to ABM Proposals

Reform Jewish leaders opposed
the ABM defense system that was
adopted by the U.S. Senate by
a narrow margin Wednesday.
In Detroit, Rabbi Irwin Groner
headed the interfaith committee
in opposition to ABM.
Appealing against the proposal
last week, Rabbi Roland B. Git-
telsohn, president of the Central
Conference of American Rabbis,

(Reform), said "it would be the
first step leading the world into
nuclear disaster."
"This may be humanity's last
chance to turn back from a disas-
trous course," Rabbi Gittelsohn
said, recalling that the CCAR'S
convention in June adopted a re-
port "in the strongest terms" re-
jecting the ABM safeguard system.
Rabbi Gittelsohn said, "We are
thoroughly convinced that in the
first instance, the system will pro-
vide no defense...The overwhelming
weight of scientific evidence sup-
ports this assertion. Furthermore,"
he said, "we are convinced that

rabbis visited here on the last leg
of a Latin American tour spon-
sored by the Rabbinical Assembly
which took them to Mexico, Brazil,
Argentina and Peru. In Buenos
Aires, they established a local

The group is headed by Rabbi

dent of the Rabbinical Assembly,
who addressed a meeting of Ven-
ezualan Jewish leaders. He said
North American Jews hear only
about the problems of their co-re-
ligionists in Latin America but not
about their achievements. He said
his group was impressed with "the
richness and strength" of the Jew-
ish communal institutions they vis-
ited on their tour. He said the tour
would promote better understand-
ing and cooperation between the
Jewish communities of North and
South America.
