The court also upheld unanimous- ly the authority of the city to grant days off for religious ob- servance to all members of the police force without pay. The court action was started by Newark Police Sgt. Joseph A. Ebler, who was later promoted to lieutenant. He complained that while all Newark police received 12 paid holidays per year with ad- ditional time off charged against accrued overtime pay, the city's 25 Jewish policemen received an additional six religious holidays annually without loss of overtime pay which, he said enabled them to earn $200 more each year than non-Jewish policemen. The Newark Shomrim Society, time practice • had been applied to Christian policemen when they took off for such religious obserP- ances as communion breakfasts and participation in Holy Name parades. Both Lt. Ebler and the Shomrim Society expressed dis- satisfaction with the court's rulings and both said they may appeal the decision. Dayan said he could not, be- cause of the current security situa- tion, take part in the work of the smaller committee. Mapai leaders reportedly said that if Gen. Dayan would not work with the seven-member smaller committee, the committee would serve no purpose. They argued that if Gen. Dayan refused to serve on the committee. Mrs. Meir also would refuse, renewing the party deadlock. Some sources said that Mrs. Meir may ask Gen. Dayan to par- ticipate in the smaller commit- tee's work and that it was hoped the committee would be able to convene today to work out an agreement before the Labor Party meets in convention next week.
