3 Roth Films Head Hollywood Productions
By HERBERT G. LUFT

HOLLYWOOD — Philip Roth, au-
thor of a series of rather unpleas-
ant novels dealing with the Jewish
upper-middle-class of today, has
the unusual fortune of being pre-
sented on the American screen with
three films within one year.
After the success of "Goodbye,
Columbus," made by Larry Peerce
(son of Jan, the Metropolitan Opera
tenor) for Paramount Pictures,
his current bestseller, "Portnoy's
Complaint" has been set for pro-
duction at 20th Century Fox. There
is great uneasiness in Jewish quar-
ters here about the motion picture
based on the highly controversial
novel.
Now, Leon Mirell, former vice
president of Selmur Productions
who made himself a name with the
independently produced Sandy Den-
nis — John Garfield, Jr. picture
"That Cold Day in the Park" (on
a low budget with Messrs. Factor-
Altman-Broidy participating), has
announced September production
of Roth's popular novel, "Letting
Go," with Harvey Hart directing
from a screenplay written jointly
with actor Mark Richman who also
portrays the character of Gabe.
While Mirell made "That Coid
Day in the Park" in Vancouver,
B.C., for Philip Roth's "Letting
Go" he goes to the Studio City,
