New Stern College Bldg.
to Rise; $1 Million Gift

NEW YORK — Philanthropist
Max Stern announced a "surprise"
gift of $1,000,000 to Yeshiva Univ-
ersity's Stern College for Women
at ground-breaking ceremonies
last week for Stern College's new
$4,500,000 classroom building in
mid-town Manhattan.
The gift from Stern vice chair-
man of Yeshiva University's board
of trustees, brings to $5,000,000 the
total he has contributed to Stern
College since the school's estab-
lishment as the nation's first
undergraduate liberal arts and sci-
ences college for women under
Jewish auspices in 1954.
The new 11-story building, ac-
commodating 1,200 students, will
be built next to Stern College's
present facility on Lexington Ave-
nue between 34th and 35th Streets
