New Exciting Novel by Eleazar Lipsky Ey JACK SIEGEL (A Seven Arts F Eleazar Lipsky, after a seven- 1 year hiatus, has published a book. It is called "The Devil's Daughter" i (Meredith). It is not another "Kissi of Death," "Murder One ' or the world of D A It is closer to "The Scientists" which was a Book of the Month Club selection. This one is a blockbuster of a novel, 600 pages, and tells what is in effect a story of star-crossed lovers. Lest one ponder how a Lipsky (son of Louis) would be concerned with such a tale, rather than the fires of Zionism and the building of a Jewish state (which he does in his private life), it is important to know that the story has a legal base (Lipsky is also an attorney). "Devil's Daughter" grows out of a happening which took place in the San Francisco area around the turn of the century. Jessica Roux is the daughter of the devil and Mark Trumbull. a former judge who once had killed a man, and who be- comes her advocate against his better judgement, is the lover. This the senator denies. She wants her status legally substan- tiated and, of course, what she is entitled to as a rejected wife. She gets her day in court which is a good part of the book. Trumbull, married to a woman slowly dying, becomes emotionally involved with Jessica who, whatever the justice of her cause, is a troublesome woman. That's the nub of the story. Involved in it is a wide spec- trum of characters who conspire against both Jessica and Mark and in the end bring them down. If you like a tale well-embroid- ered in elegant prose, with a well- researched and knowled g e a b l e basis in law; if you like the aroma of the west and enjoy having it brought before your eyes, then Mr. Lipsky's book is for you. Some years back there was a picaresque best seller called Anthony Adverse. It was a tale well told and stocked with information beyond the ken of the reader. In many ways, Lip- sky's book reminds me of it. His price is not too stiff and it worth the entry fee into another world, a more leisurely one, in which you will find that people have not changed much after all, especially judges, about whom we are read- ing so much these days. WSU President William Keast suspended the South End I July II He said later that had summer editor Cheryl McCall been allowed to publish the "revolutionary" issue of the paper, state legislators might have demanded a permanent closing of the South End. Keast called the new publication board "'a promising arrangement". and said that it deserved the chance to put out a good school paper. Friday, July 25, 1969-27 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Increases Exports of Canned Food to U.S. - JERUSALEM — Israel's produc- tion of select canned foods for ex- port to the United States is being spurred by advanced agricultural techniques and improved process ing methods with the aid of Israel Bonds. Utilizing Israel Bond capital to increase the production of indus- trial crops and to modernize fac- tories which process food, Israel has doubled its exports of canned citrus, tomatoes and apricots to America, going from $1,600,000 in 1967 to $3.200,000 last year. Exports to this country are expected to reach $5,000,000 by the end of 1969. Approximately 80,000 tons of to- matoes are being processed in Is- rael to make canned peeled toma- toes, pizza sauce, tomato juice and catsup, for export to the U.S. this year, which should result in esti- mated earnings of $2,000,000. Canned apricot halves, totaling 5,000 tons, are expected to produce an addi- tional $2,000,000 in foreign cur- rency, while some 250,000 cases of canned grapefruit and orange seg- ments should net another $1,000,000 in export funds. We must beware of needless in- novations, especially when guided by logic.—Winston S. Churchill. DON'T BE LATE ! Israel's mer- chant fleet, which totaled 6,000 tons in 1948, has already passed the 1,500,000-ton mark. Israel's ships now dock at the ports of more than 100 countries through- out the world. Israel's shipping industry plans to expend $150,000,000 to bring its displacement capacity to 3,000,000 tons by the end of 1971, with the , financial help of Israel Bonds in the form of development budget loans. More than $350,000,000 has already been invested in the development of Israel's merchant marine since the establishment of the State. In 1968 Israel's shipping com- panies reported a total revenue of about $400,000,000, an increase of approximately 10 per cent over 1967. Israel expects this figure to rise another 10 per cent by the end of 1969. NEMETH ,BROD S..DRAPERIES 8520 W. NINE MILE ROAD 546-2080 ch.' 5464930 MICHIGAN BANKARD HONORED
