Foundation for Jew ish Culture Elects
Mandell Berman to Executive Body

GENEVA (JTA)—The Memorial
Foundation for Jewish Culture has
allocated $1,260,-
000 during fiscal
year 1969-70 for
Jewish cultural
and educational
programs through
out the world.
according to a re-
port submitted
here by Dr. Jo-
seph J. Schwartz,
foundation treas-
Berman
urer.
Detroiter Mandell Berman was
elected to the executive committee.
Dr. Nahum Goldmann was named
president.
The allocation represented an in-
crease of 858.000 over the funds
disbursed during fiscal 1967-68.
Fifty percent of the allocations
went to Israel. Europe received
35 per cent, the United States 16
per cent and all other countries
3 per cent.

dation's board of trustees that
S1,127.000 or 89 per cent of the
1968-69 grants were to organiza-
tions and institutions; S116,000
to scholarship and fellowship
programs; and $18,000 for doc-
umentation of the Nazi holo-
caust.
Part of the discussion centered

around the establishment of a
commission of Jewish education
within the framework of Cojo. the
Conference of Jewish Organiza-
tions. The commission would re-
place the World Council of Jewish
Education.
Dr. Moses Rosen. chief rabbi of
Romania. urged the Memorial
Foundation to pay more attention
of basic Jewish education instead
of higher education. According to
Dr. Rosen. primary school is some-
time more vital than postgraduate
studies from the point of view of
preserving Jewish tradition and
Jewish faith.

Jewish Center employes were
back at work Monday following the
ratification last Thursday of a con-'
tract by the agency and Local 1640
of the American Federation of
State. County and Municipal Em-
ployes.
Actual signing of the contract
was to take place this week. All
but two of the 14 agencies origi- !
nally struck by Local 1640, in a;
bargaining dispute with United
Community Services and the United
Foundation, are back in full opera-
tions.
Three weeks ago the staff of the
Jewish Family and Children's
Service returned to work follow-
ing agreement with the union.
They are currently working on de-

Wandering into a gift shop in
Marquette, a vacationing Detroit
couple was surprised to see a shelf
filled with items made in Israel.
Several mezuzas were displayed
prominently.
Realizing that the store proprie-
tess was not Jewish, the couple
asked if there was much of a mar-
ket for "this type of thing" in Mar-
quette.

Marquette, - the couple pursued.
"No. there aren't," she said, "but
we don't sell them to Jews so
much—maybe we've sold to three
at the most. We sell them to Chris-
tians.
"After all," she added, "it's sort
of Christian, too, don't you think?'

In Psalms 115, 16 we read: "The
heavens are the heavens of the

Lord; but the earth bath He given

to the children of men." This psalm

is part of a compilation of prayers
called Ballet recited on the Sab-
bath coincident with the New
Moon (Rosh Hodesh), on Sabbath
Hanuka and on the three festivals
of Pesah. Shavuot and Sukot.
Had the author of the above
psalm been our contemporary and
watched the unprecedented feat of
Apollo ti, he undoubtedly would
have added three words after the
word "earth" in the second phrase
of the above passage, to wit: "and
the moon. - Thus the phrase would
properly read: but the earth and
the moon hath He given to the chil-
dren of men.

The original prayer in point is'
"As I attempt to leap towards thee
(moon), but cannot touch thee, so
may those who attempt to injure
4
me. be unable to reach me."
As of July 20, the above prayer
has become obsolete and meaning-
: less, for Eagle's crew has not only
"touched" the craggy surface of
the moon, but Commander Arm-
, strong "picked up a piece of the
, moon and stuffed it in his pocket -
, (Free Press. July 21) as he emerg-
ed from the lunar module, and
later he and Col. Aldrin scooped
up 14 rock samples which explor-
ing the flat area on Tranquility
Base.
Hence, would it not be prudent
to delete entirely such prayers as
the one cited above which does not
relate to the new status of the
moon in wake of the Apollo 11's
successful enterprise opening new
vistas to the universe?
