THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, July 18, 1969-39 Elias Lieberman, 85; Educator and Poet Maurice Hindus, 78; Authority on USSR Dr. Elias Lieberman, noted educator, who • gained fame as a poet, died July 13 in his home in Queens, N.Y., at the age of 85. Former principal of Thomas Jef- ferson High School in New York, he also served as associate super- intendent of New York junior high schools. He retired in 1954 but continued writing poetry until his last days, some yet to be published in na- tional magazines. Maurice Hindus, noted author, who was one of the leading authori- ties on the Soviet Union and Rus- sian history, died July 8, aged 78. He lived in Rus- sian collective colonies and wrote extensively on various aspects of Russian history. He wrote more than a dozeni books related to the Communist program and Socialist programs. Simons, a mem- member of one df Detroit's most prominent families and an active leader in many women's move- ments, died July 10 at the age of 71. Her late residence was in North Park Towers. Surviving are two sons, Broudy and Edgar, and two grandchildren. She was the widow of Nathan Simons. A former officer in Women's ORT, Mrs. Simons also was active in Shaarey Zedek, Hadassah, Na- tional Council of Jewish Women and the Franklin Hills and Great Lakes clubs.
