Large Increases M ade for Education

NEW YORK (JTA)—During the
past 25 years, Jewish Federations
have increased their total annual'
allocations for Jewish education by
800 per cent from ;800,000 to
86,500,000, the Council of Jewish
Federations and Welfare Funds re-

ports.

CJFWF information was dislosed
at meetings of its board and na-
tional committees. The report said
that while this eight-fold jump still

gross annual expenditures for Jew-
ish education in the United States

preciation" for Jewish education

Outside of New York City, the
report said, Jewish education is
now receiving one-fourth of fed-
erations funds available for local
purposes, excluding Community
Chest funds.
The report said one federation
allocates 56 per cent of its local
funds for Jewish education and
that several others budget as much
as one-third.
In the intermediate-size commu
nities, 13 out of 15 federations now
make allocations for Jewish edu-
cation.
Excluding Community C h e s t
funds, allocations for Jewish edu-
cation exceed on the average 31
per cent of local funds, with
"some running as high as 50 per
cent or more, and one community
at the 86 per cent mark."

Yigal Allon Made
Freeman of Lydda

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Deputy Pre-
mier Yigal Allon was made a free-
man of the town of Lydda but De-

fense Minister Dayan declined the
same honor when it was offered to
him.
The occasion was the 21st anni-
versary of the liberation of Lydda
during Israel's War of Indepndence
in 1948. Alon, then leader of Pal-
mach, the attack arm of Hagana,
was the commander in charge of
the operation that took Lydda from
the Arabs. Gen. Dayan also parti-
cipated in the battle as commander
of a motorized brigade that consist-
ed of jeeps' and a single armored
car. His force was the first to enter
Lydda. But when he was offered
the status of freeman of the town
he declined, saying he was opposed
to such honors in principle.
