BRUSSELS (JTA) — A friendly

congress of the International Con-
federation of Free Trade Unions
which ended here without taking a
stand on the Middle East conflict.
The question of representation
for the Middle East region was
taken up at the session and ir!
order to avoid conflict, the delegate
of Histadrut, Israel's labor federa-
tion, proposed that the seat ne
rotated between Israel and the_
Arab states. He proposed further
that, as a matter of courtesy, the
Lebanese representative should take
the first turn. His proposal was ac-
cepted by the ICFTU executive.

to hammer out a resolution on the

German Who Saved
Jewish Family Is Hero

OFFENBURG. West Germany—
After 27 years of keeping his
secret with only his wife. Franz
Lienert, a retired railroad em-
ploye, has become a hero here.
Lienert, 1, a Nazi customs offi-
cial stationed at the Polish-Ru-'
manian frontier during the war.
saved a Jewish family from de-
portation and death.
In 1942, Lienert became friends
with Paul Romer. the local phar-
macist at Kuty. after buying a
salve from him.
"We weren't supposed to enter
Jewish shops, but we customs peo-
ple along the border didn't worry
much about the police." I.ienert
said.
One night in October while visit-
ing Romer. the Jews of Kuty were
herded into the market place .
Lienert told Romer to hide his
wife and three children in the cel-
lar, just before two l'kranian
SS guards hit the front door with
bullets.
Lienert stood in front of the SS
men and told them "I am in com-
mand of this house." Apparently
impressed by the swastika on his
uniform. the guards left.
A short while later. the Romer
family left Kuty and went under-
ground where "woods and fields
afforded us protection and sus-
tenance." They moved on to Wro-
claw in western Poland and from
there emigrated to Israel in 1957.
Recently Romer launched his
search to express belated thanks.
Last month the West German po-
lice wired that Lienert had been
found and he became a local cele-
brity, much against his will.
"I shall pay my debt of grati-
tude and plant a tree for you in
the Grove of the Just." Romer
wrote from Haifa. •
The Offenburg government paid
tribute to Lienert by giving him
a plaque inscribed. "In tribute to
a noble deed—your grateful com-
munity."
