Rabbis Alliance Raps Finkelstein
NEW YORK (JTA)—The Ortho-
dox Rabbinical Alliance of Amer-
ica criticized Dr. Louis Finkelstein,
chancellor of the conservative
Theological Seminary of America,
for "allowing inclusion of a Chris-
tian hymn" in the non-denomina-
tional religious service at the

spokesman said after the service
that all White House services,
though non-denominational, includ-
ed a Christian Doxology. "That
basic form of the service is con-
stant," he said, "even though the
faith of the speaker changes."

of the Rabbinical Alliance, which
claims a membership of 500, de-

Goldberg Condemns
Capital Punishment
in Appeal for Sirhan
NEW YORK—Arthur Goldberg,
former U.S. amabasador to the
United Nations, issued a plea to
California Governor Ronald Rea-
gan to commute the death sentence
of Sirhan Sirhan, convicted assas-
sin of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.
"I am convinced," said Goldberg
in his letter, "that whatever may
be said of times past, the evolving
standards of decency that mark the
progress of our society now con-
demn as barbaric and inhuman the
deliberate institutionalized taking
of human life by the state."
Goldberg's name was included in
Sirhan's diary, which listed both
him and Sen. Kennedy for assas-
sination. He said he was marked
for death evidently "because I rep-
resented our government as its am-
bassador to the United Nations at
the time of the debates on the con-
flict in the Middle East."

While Arabs Attack, Israel Saves Life
JERUSALEM (JTA)—While Jordanian Army regulars, guerrillas
and Iraqi troops stationed in Jordan continue to attack Israel almost
daily, the authorities in Amman are making use of Israel's "open
bridges" policy which permits the free communication by civilians
between Jordan and the Israeli-held West Bank. The life of at least one
Arab child was saved by the open bridges.
A six-year-old boy from Zatka township in Jordan, left Hadassah
Hospital in Jerusalem completely recovered from open heart surgery.
The youngster and his mother crossed into Israel more than three weeks
ago for medical treatment. The mother stayed with her child in the hos-
pital for the entire period of surgery and post-surgical treatment. The
boy will stay with relatives in Jerusalem for another month of medical
check-Ups.

Polish Plan to Reduce
Exit Visas is Protested
LONDON (JTA)—Two groups of
former Polish Jews have protested
the Warsaw government's an-
nounced intention, starting Sept. 1,
of curtailing exit visas for Jews
who want to leave for Israel. A
resolution adopted at a joint meet-
ing of the Association of Polish-
Jewish ex-servicemen and the As-
sociation of Jews of Polish Origin
demanded that "those Polish Jews
who wish to leave the country
where they are degraded and per-
secuted must be allowed to do so
without hinderance and humilia-
tion."
Polish Jews have been emigrating
in fairly large numbers since the
June. 1967 Arab-Israel war when
the Warsaw regime severed diplo-
matic relations with Israel and
adopted an openly anti-Israel stand.
The numbers departing increased
last year following student rims
in Poland which the authorities
blamed on "Zionists" and which
were followed by an official anti-
Jewish purge and propaganda
campaign. Departing Jews obtain
their Israeli visas from the Dutch
Embassy which handles Israeli in-
terests in Warsaw. Exit permits
are issued without difficulty, though
Jews are permitted to take only $5
in cash out of the country and must
pay a heavy tariff to remove valu-
able personal property.
