Survival of Christianity Is Called
Matter of Serious Concern to Jews

NEW YORK—"For the first time
in Jewish history, Jews need be
concerned that Christianity survive
as a living meaningful religion,"
Dr. Milton Konovitz, professor of
industrial and labor relations at
Cornell University, declared in his
address at the commencement
exercises of Her zliah Hebrew
Teachers Institute and Jewish
Teachers Seminary—People's Uni-
versity, at the Waldorf Astoria
Hotel.
"There is the great danger,
especially in A meric a, that
with the disappearance of Chris-
tianity, Jews too may disappear.
There is the danger that when
Christians cease to be Christians,
and become only gentiles, the Jews
as Jews may also disappear. The
death of God for Christians. may
also mean the death of the God of
Israel, and the post-Christian era
may mean also the post-Jewish
era."
The only Yiddish-Hebrew teacher
training college in America con-
ferred honorary degrees on poet
Aaron Zeitlin for his contributions
to Yiddish and Hebrew literature,
and to Abraham Goodman for life-

long leadership in the cause of
Zionism and Jewish education.
Nineteen students received He-
brew and Yiddish teacher diplomas
and baccalaureate degrees at the
exercises which marked the corn-
plettion of the second year of the
merged schools, each with a his-
tory of 50 years of service to
higher Jewish education.
In addition to the honorary de-
grees, another first will be marked
by the school, with the graduates,
who will be serving Orthodox, Con-
servative, Ref or m, community
and Yiddish schools throughout the
United States and Canada, having
completed a four-year course of
study which included Yiddish as an
integral part of the mandatory
curriculum—the only such require-
ment in any American Jewish
teachers training college.

NY Teachers Contract
Allows 3 Paid Days Off
for Religious Holidays

NEW YORK (JTA)—The Associa-
tion of Orthodox Jewish Teachers
in New York City Schools reported
that an appeal to the United Fed-
eration of Teachers had brought
agreement in the new UFT con-
tract with the city board of educa-
tion allowing teachers to have three
days off with pay for observance
of religious holidays.
Philip Kipust, association presi-
dent, said that the UFT, in re-
sponse to an association request,
had proposed in the contract talks
five days off with pay from the
10 days sick leave which all teach-
ers are allowed annually. The
agreement is expected to be rati-
fied by the rank-and-file without
difficulty.
Kipust said also that Dr. Sey-
mour Lachman, a board of edu-
cation member from Brooklyn
had told him • that the three-day
clause was negotiated specifically
to allow time off for religious
holidays without loss of pay. He
added that the association was
"not happy. with the contract. We
wanted all the sick leave days
to be used for religious purposes.
Some years there are 10 re-
ligious holidays," but he praised
Dr. Lachman as being "sensitive
to our cause." He reported also
that registration for public school
summer classes, originally sched-
uled for a Friday, had been re-
scheduled in deference to Jewish
students' religious practices.
