Griffin Leaders of more than 40 labor unions, peach movements, Detroit area churches, synagogues and political organizations have joined the Michigan Stop ABM Commit- tee in calling for massive picket- ing of the Federal Building in downtown Detroit 4-6 p.m. Tues- day to demonstrate opposition to the Nixon administration's pro- posed Safeguard anti-ballistic mis- sile system. Rabbi Irwin Groner is chairman. Charging that Congressional ap- proval of Safeguard would lead to ". . . escalation of the worldwide arms race and an incredible waste of tax dollars," Stop ABM leaders are hoping to influence Senate de- bate and vote on the measure scheduled to begin in Washington after the July 4 recess. The Federal Building offices of Senators Phillip Hart and Robert Griffin will be the target of the picketing. The demonstrators will show their support of Hart's posi- tion opposing Safeguard and hope to change Griffin's mind on the measure. Among the advisory board mem- bers are Rep. Daniel Cooper, Lewis Grossman, Bernard Klein and Richard Lobenthal. The steering committee includes Mrs. Susan Grossman, Larry Horo- witz, Nancy Levine, Prof. Alfred Saperstein, Harley Selling, Rudy Simons and Mrs. Elizabeth Weide- man.
