Loren of Greenfield Ave., Oak Park, will start to work on his doctorate. His reason is simple: "I like to study." A retired businessman, Loren first started studying at Wayne in 1925 after arriving in this country from Russia. There, a Communist official had told him after the Bol- shevik Revolution that he could leave the country or be shot. He escaped from Russia in 1921 with the other members of his family and went to Romania. In 1923, Loren, his parents and three other members of the family arrived in New York as the bells were tolling for the funeral of President War- ren G. Harding. "I thought at first they were ringing the bells for us," said Loren. A laundry opened by Loren and a partner was successful enough so that Loren was able to study at Wayne; he received his first degree in 1930. He planned to follow a career as an accountant but was disappoint- ed. "The personnel people I talked with all told me 'You've got two strikes against you. You are Jew- ish and a foreigner," said Loren. He continued in the laundry and dry cleaning business for another 36 years. meanwhile sending his five children through college. The youngest three, triplets Rosalyn, Marilyn and Carolyn, got their bachelar's degrees at Wayne State. While they studied in college, their father studied Talmud, Jew- ish law and tradition. In 1966, Loren sold his cleaning business and began studying for his master's degree in Wayne State's school of business administration. He also teaches as a substitute in the Detroit Public Schools. When he has been awarded his MBA degree, Loren would like to teach in a junior college. Meanwhile he plans to work to- ward his doctorate in education. "I'd like to teach mathematics. And I'd also like to instill in my young students an. appreciation for their democracy. I've lived under a dictatorship and I know how won- derful this country is," he said. 01 Large Selection of Modern Lamps and Shades in Stock.
