Rabbi Lithe appealed to the

meeting and in letters, to the effect
the merger would not be to Beth
Hillel's advantage. He said Beth
Hillel eventually would disappear
and that the contract held with
Hebrew Benevolent Society for free
burial services would not be as-
sured in the future.
Haar insists that the merger
agreement guaranteed continued
free burial service for present Beth
Hillel members and their families.
The Beth Abraham Cemetery Asso-
ciation possibly would exist as in-
dependent of the new congregation.
Among the features of the mer-
ger agreement was the naming of
Beth Abraham spiritual leader
Israel I. Halpern as rabbi of the
merged congregation and Rabbi
Litke as associate rabbi and edu-
cator on a two-year contract.

President Yaakov Chacham of
Nezach Israel. Ashkelon, and the
Tora in M. Ben Lewis' honor

The escorting of a Tora into the
Nezach Israel synagogue near
Ashkelon was part of the celebra-
tion presenting a Holy Scroll given
by the Lewis family of Detroit in
honor of the birthday of M. Ben
Lewis.
President Yaakov Chacham and
Rabbi Philip Spector spoke in
honor of the occasion. Rabbi Spec-
tor, a Jewish Theological Semin-
ary graduate, announced that an-
other Tora is to be given the syna-
gogue by the Men's Club of De-
troit's Shaarey Zedek.
The congregation that received
the Tora is composed of Oriental
Jews. The selection of this syna-
gogue was made by Rabbi Milton
Arm of Cong. Beth Achim.
The mantle on the Tora bears
an inscription with the names of
Mr. and Mrs. M. Ben Lewis, Rose
Lewis and Norma Hudosh.

With the defeat of the proposal,
