Interracial Day Camp
at Temple for Summer

SAN DIEGO (JTA) — An inter-
racial summer day camp, proposed
by a California couple as a mean-
ingful Jewish response to the as-
sassination last year of Martin
Luther King. proved such a suc-
cess that it is being held again this
summer for 60 white, Negro and
Mexican-American children. The
camp is held in the religious school
facilities of the Reform synagogue
to Which the couple belongs.
Camp Uni, held at Temple Beth
Israel here, brough together 60
children last summer for six three-
day weeks. According to Norman
Fogel, temple administrator, six
were Mexican-Americans. 14 were
white and 40 were black. With the
exception of temple professional
staff members, who served as ad
visors, all members of the Camp
Uni staff were volunteers. The
camp was the idea of Mr. and Mrs.
Stanley Foster.
One of Camp Uni*s co-directors,
Mrs. Delroy Richardson, is a Ne
gro mother and a members of the
temple, who was converted after
extensive studies in Judaism.

Sam Goldwyn Jr. St irks to Producing

By HERBERT G. LUFT

(Copyright, 1969, JTA. Inc.)

HOLLYWOOD — Arnold Peri.
whose dramatization of Sholem
Aleichem stories provided the basis
for the musical, "Fiddler on the
Roof," now presents us with the
screenplay for "Cotton Comes to
Harlem," written in conjunction
with black writer-actor-director
Ossie Davis, from the novel by
Chester Himes, with Davis direct-
ing on actual location for producer
Samuel Goldwyn Jr.

Goldwyn, the 42-year-old son of
the legendary co-founder of Holly-
wood, last produced and directed
the not-too-successful beat-genera-
tion picture, "The Young Lovers."

Danish Collection
of Judaica on Tour

NEW YORK — Thirty-two rare
and beautiful volumes of Hebraica
and Judaica from the Danish
Royal Library have been touring
the United States this spring under
the watchful eye of the director of
! the library's Jewish department.
According to Dr. Rafael Edel-
mann, director, the collection is ir-
replaceable. Some books date back
to the 17th Century, when King
Frederik the Third founded the col-
lection as his personal library.
Dr. Edelman, who has been with
the library since 1933. has acquired
some 50,000 books himself—includ-
ing, in 1949, the huge library of
Lazarus Goldschmidt of Berlin and
London.
Because of the importance of

the collection, Copenhagen is the
center of the Association of Li-
braries of Judaica and Hebraica
in Europe.

Now he confines himself to the
chore of producer.
The younger Goldwyn started

his motion picture career, after
army service, at Universal Stu-
dios in Hollywood 20 years ago.
His documentary feature, "Alli-
ance for Peace," made after a
recall to service, won the Edin-
burgh Film Festival award.
