TAKE THE FAMILY
OUT TO DINNER AND A SHOW
AFTER YEARS OF WORKING
as a busboy. dishwasher, waiter,
clothing salesman, manager and
buyer and restaurant owner, the
big year for Sam "Sammy" Lieb-
erman, who'll be honored June 30,
by the City of Hope Cancer Fight-
ers, came in 1962 when he organ-
ized the Raleigh House on Wyom-
ing . . . It soon became one of the
finest catering establishments in
the midwest...Before long, Ra-
leigh House had outgrown itself
and in November of 1967, a huge
new building, capable of serving
from 50 to 2,000 people at one time,
opened on Telegraph Rd. in South-
field...Sammy's dream of some-
day having one of the nation's larg-
est and finest catering establish-
ments had come true...Today. it
is greater than ever...and a week
from Monday will be the site of
the testimonial dinner from whose
outcome will arise a Sam Lieber-
man Fellowship at the City of Hope
National Medical Research Center
in Duarte, Calif. ... George Jessel
will be here.
A LOCAL COMMUNITY-ITE
who complains about the short
walk from the parking lot to Sinai
Hospital should be ashamed of him-
helf...He gets up every morning
and walks two miles just for the
exercise!
IN SUNDAY SCHOOL class she
taught before returning here from
Los Angeles recently, Edith Rosen
tells of the children just finishing
studying the Ten Commandments
...On a written test, she asked
what is meant by the word "Adul-
try."...One little girl wrote,
"Adultery is the sin of saying you
are older than you really are."
GET WELL WISHES TO...Dud-
ley Musket ... at home after being
hospitalized by ticker trouble.
CAN A YOUNG MAN FROM a
small New England city meet a
young lady from a big city in the
Midwest and fall in love? ... "You
Bet Your Life!" says Jim
"Groucho" Rachleff ... It happen-
ed to Jim and a girl named Esther
Sherman ... After corresponding
with each other for 21/2 years, she
asked him to send a recent picture
of himself ... Jimmy sent one of
Rudolph Valentino ... In return,
Esther sent him a picture of Nor-
ma Shearer... Jim finally came to
Detroit for a visit, arrived on a
Sunday and phoned his mother in
Hartford, Conn., on Thursday, say-
ing he was engaged and getting
married in June ... Tommorrow,
Esther and Jimmy Rachleff will
celebrate their 40th wedding anni-
versary ... "We've been happily
married 40 years," says Detroit's
own Groucho. "Where did I go
wrong?"
SID SA CH S, advertising art
studio boss, bet Tiger Publication
boss Herman Goldman that on the
day his daughter, Shirley Dick-
stein, gave birth, the Detroit Tigers
would win and he'd have a grand-
son ... The Tigers did their part,
it was a boy, Loren Marc, present-
ed by Shirley and hubby Denny as
the second grandchild for Sid and
wife Mary.
Naturalization
The English Jewish Naturaliza-
tion Bill, which was intended to
facilitate the naturalization and
promote the immigration of for-
eign Jews, was passed by the Eng-
lish Parliament in May, 1753. Op-
position to the bill in the country
caused its repeal in December,
1753.
