There is a story about one of
the first, if not the first, Jewish
hotel in Israel. It was more than
a half century ago. The hotel was
located in Jaffa. It was no Waldorf-

manager's wife would make you
some chicken soup. The owner-
manager was a peculiar fellow. not
really suited at all for his job. He
would say to his guests. - What are
you waiting around here for? There
is nothing going to happen here.
Pack up and go home."
The picture has changed greatly
since then. According to Capital for
Israel Organization, there are to-
day in Israel 277 hotels of the
"recommended type." There are
others, of course. not eligible for

Approximately half a million
tourists now arrive annually in
Israel. And there is another ins-
portant factor. In Europe, the tour-
ist's average stay is only four or
five days. In Israel, the average
stay of the tourist is 14 days.
