REHOVOT—A $250,000 chair, to
be known as the Lee and William
Abramowitz Chair in Polymer
Chemistry, has been established in
perpetuity at the Weizmann Insti-
tute of Science by William L.
Abramowitz, New England busi-
ness leader and philanthropist, it
was announce d
by Dewey D.
Stone, chairman
of the institute's
boar d of gover-
nors.
Abramowitz
who is a member
of the board of
the Weizmann In-
stitute, came to
know the work of
the institute when
he headed a two-
week study mis
sion of New Eng-
land business
leaders, oriented
to science, to Re-
Abramowitz
hovot in 1966 for the purpose of
studying the institute with a view
to helping to promote links be-
tween the institute and the appli-
cation of its research through
American business leaders. He is
a member of the president's devel-
opment committee of the Massa-
chusetts Institute of Technology,
from which he graduated in 1935.
He is also a trustee of the Jewish
Agency for Israel. He is chairman
of the, board of Medicon.

' the Four Powers prepare a Middle
East peace package that they have
no business preparing."
He said he agreed with the ad-
ministration that "a renewal of the
war in the Middle East could pos-
sibly drag in the U.S.," but, he
said, the nation's effort to negotiate
a settlement for the Mid East
against the wishes of Israel could
not come before "our obligation to
negotiate a settlement for our-
selves in Vietnam."
He declared that the U.S. "does
have a role to play in the Middle
East. We need not stand aloof and
watch the status quo deteriorate.
We need not rest our hopes for
peace on an unstable arms race
and a pattern of attack and repri-
sal. We can be of assistance, not by
helping to prepare a Big Four
(U.S.. Russia, France and Britain)
package—for two of the Four are
not really 'so big' and their pack-
age has more liabilities than assets
—but by working primarily with
the Soviet Union, the one real power
in the area whose interest cannot
be excluded, even while we hope to
minimize its presence, to help the
parties settle this themselves."
Bernard Katzen, who has served
as a special consultant to the Re-
publican National Committee,
voiced support for the Big Four
talks and the U.S.-Soviet bilateral
meetings in Washington on the Mid
East, but only on the condition
"that they will not result in any
imposed solution, overt or covert,
and that they will lead ultimately
to direct peace talks."

Hebrew U. Establishing
Dept. of Demography

JERUSALEM — A new depart-
ment for demography is to be open-

ed at the Hebrew University for
research in population, social and
economic problems and special
aspects of Israeli demography.
Among the subjects to be con-
sidered is the development of re-
search into the demography of
Diaspora Jewry, in cooperation
with the Institute of Contemporary
Jewry. The Jewish population in
most countries of the Diaspora is
presently undergoing a dangerous
crisis following a drop in the
birth rate, an aging of the popula-
tion and an increase in mixed mar-
riages.
