Philip Gilberts Honored on 50th
Anniversary ; Many Services Noted

A distinguished Detroit couple ceptions were arranged here for

Dramatic Club also arranged re-
ceptions for many other notables,
including Peretz Hirshbein, Ye-
hoash and others, and Gilbert met
the literary giants of that era. The
literary and dramatic club dis-
banded in 1917 because many mem-
bers were called to service in
World War I.

MR., MRS. PHILIP GILBERT

Gilbert took great pride in the
literary activities of his brother,
the late Shlomo Gilbert. who was
a noted poet. essayist and lit-
erary critic and who was mur-
dered by the Nazis. Shlomo Gil-
bert's cork were published here
by Philip Gilbert in tribute to
his brother and the Yiddish an- .
thology of the martyred poet's
poem. short stories and other
'critings attracted at ten t i o n
witoug Yiddish•reading groups
Throughout the world.

ingham by their children, Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Gilbert. Dr. and Mrs.
Daniel Gilbert and Mr. and Mrs.
Allan Gilbert. The Gilberts have 11 cipients of scores of messages of
grandchildren.

The Gilberts, who were married on for their community efforts from a
June 15. 1919, are known in many number of leading organizations.

ed distinct services especially to
educational causes and to Israel.
Mrs. Gilbert, the former Eva

Ashinsky. was brought to De-
troit at the age of 6 by her par-
ents. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ashin-
sky. Her father was a noted
Hebrew scholar who conducted
the largest local Hebrew private
school at the time. She attended
Bishop elementary school. Cass
High and Detroit Business In-
stitute.

From age 17 she was active in
Ilaciassah and served as chairman
of Hadassah's Jewish National
Fund committee and in various
other capacities. Her affiliations in-
clude the United Hebrew Schools,
Women's Auxiliary, Women's
American ORT, Women's Auxiliary
of Home for Aged and Sisterhood
of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, in
all of which she takes a deep inter-
est.

Philip Gilbert, a pioneer Zi-
onist, serves on the board of
the Zionist Organization of De-
troit. He has taken a leading
part in the planning for expan-
sion of the United Hebrew
Schools and under his chairman-
ship several agreements had
been reached for inclusion of
congregational schools in the
the I'HS unified school system.
An active member of Shaarey
Zedek. he and Mrs. Gilbert are
regular attendees at Sabbath
services.

Upon his retirement from the
wholesale notions business several
years ago he devoted his time for
a number of years, until two years
ago, to efforts to secure employ-
ment for the elderly and was high-
ly successful in that assignment.
When Gilbert came to Detroit in
1915 he became a leader in the
Progressive Literary and Dramatic
Society and under his direction re-
