Illinois Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie,
at an Israel Bond dinner at the
executive mansion, urged Ameri-
cans to support Israel's economic
growth as a means of strengthen-
ing the chances of peace in the
Middle East. "The achievements
which Israel has attained in the
development of a dynamic young
democracy," he said, "must be
continued uninterrupted."

Honored for 25 years of service
as spiritual adviser of the National
Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs,
Rabbi JOEL S. GEFFEN advised
almost 1,000 members of the 375-
club federation that "the highest
priority of its future work must be
given to meeting and communi-
cating with the campus genera-
tion." Speaking at the five-day con-
vention of the federation at the
Concord Hotel, Rabbi Geffen said ,
that "the challenge of its youth is
the most critical problem facing
the Jewish community today."

CHARLES H. CROSS, New York
stock broker, has been elected
president of the Jewish Institute
for Geriatric Care and the spon-
soring institution, the Home and
Hospital of the Daughters of Is-
rael, by its board of trustees.

Dr. Ernest M. Gaynes was re-
cently cited as Michigan Optome-
trist of the Year at the convention
of the Michigan Optometric Asso-
ciation at Boyne
Mountain. Dr.
Gaynes, previous-
ly named the
Wayne County So-
ciety of Optome-
trists' optometrist
of the year, was
cited by the coun-
ty group for de-
voting "his entire
professional ca-

care." A graduate of Ohio State
University, he has served North
End Clinic and Shifman Clinic for
many years. He has been chairman
of the optometrists and opticians
section in the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign and is a member of the De-
troit Service Group of the Jewish
Welfare Federation. Dr. ROBERT
H. SHORR, another Detroit op-
tometrist, was named winner of
the Michigan Optometric Associa-
tion Emil H. Arnold Award for
optometric publication during the
1968-69 association year. The
award presentation was for a series
of articles in "The Michigan Opto-
metrist" by Dr. Shorr on "Opto-
metry for Children."

JACK D. WEILER, real estate
leader and philanthropist, was
honored June 4 on his 65th birth-



day by 200 friends and associates
at the headquarters of the United
Jewish Appeal of Greater New
York. Weiler has held top leader-
ship posts in the organization for
more than two decades and is
honorary chairman of its trustees
and a chairman of the current
drive for the Israel Emergency
Fund.

MRS. B. JOSEPH HAMMOND of
Los Angeles received the Ameri-
can Judaism Award of the Society
of Honor of the Reform Jewish
Appeal, at a banquet honoring her
recently at the Hotel Pierre.
New York City. The award, a
shofar, was presented by Dr. Nel-
son Glueck, president of Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion. An award of honor also
was conferred upon Mrs. Ham-
mond by the Friends of the He-
brew Union College-Jewish Insti-
tute of Religion, California School,
in a surprise ceremony.

The National Council for Jewish
Education, at its annual conference
in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New
York, elected DANIEL ISAACM A N,
registrar of Gratz College, as presi-
dent for a two-year term, succeed-
ing Dr. Abraham P. Gannes, direc-
tor of the department of education
and culture of the Jewish Agency.

Jane Frances Firestone and Ens.
Marshall E. Rachmiel, U.S. Navy,
were married Sunday at the Hilton
Plaza Hotel, Miami Beach. Rabbi
Max Lipschitz officiated.

The bride is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Bernard Randall Fire-
stone of Miami Shores. The bride-
groom is the son of former De-
troiter Mrs. Sophia Lax of N.
Miami Beach and the late Daniel
Rachmiel.

A 1969 graduate of the U.S. Naval
Academy, he was the recipient of
the Yaeger Memorial Award and
secretary of his class. .
