James P. Warburg Financier, Adviser
to Presidents Roose velt, Kennedy

GREENWICH, Conn.-Financier
James P. Warburg, who was a con-
fidant of Presidents, died here at
age 72. He was part of a prominent
international banking family whose
cross-relationships were described
in Stephen Birmingham's "Our
Crowd."
Mr. Warburg had more than 30
books to his name and was an in-
veterate letter writer on American
foreign policy - usually as a dis-
senter. He was associated closely
with Presidents Franklin D. Roose-
velt and John F. Kennedy.
In 1931, at age 35, he became
president of the International
Acceptance Bank and a year
later became director of the
Bank of Manhattan Co. He held
directorships in many com-
panies, and made a second for-
tune with his early support of
the Polaroid Corp. in the late
1930s.

Isaac Hurwitz, 87

Isaac Hurwitz, a retired shoe
merchant with offices on Grand
River for many years, died May 29
at age 87.
Mr. Hurwitz, 980 Whitmore, had
an office at Cunningham Drugs
following his retirement 10 years
ago. He was a member of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek for 60 years and
belonged to Perfection Lodge of
the Masons and Moslem Shrine.
Born in Georgetown, S. C., Mr.
Hurwitz lived in Detroit for most
of his life.
Surviving is a daughter, Mrs-
Carle F. (Clara) Cziske.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Mr.
Warburg was the son of Paul M.
Warburg and the former Nina
Loeb, daughter of the founder of
Kuhn, Loeb & Co. investment
bankers. He was graduated Phi
Beta Kappa from Harvard in 1917
and served in the Navy Flying
Corps during World War I. During
the Second World War, he was de-
puty director of the Office of War
Information.
Mr. Warburg was a strong ad-
vocate, in .his writing and lectures,
of the cause of peace and recon-
ciliation. Among his interests
were music (he was chairman of
the board of the Julliard School
of Music) and poetry, three vol-
umes of which he published.

Florist Joseph Israel

Joseph Israel, owner and presi-
dent of the Detroit Florists Ex-
change, wholesale florists at 124
Sproat, since 1949. died Tuesday
at age 56. He resided at 1512 Cook,
Grosse Pointe Woods.
Born in Poland, Mr- Israel lived
in the Detroit area for 31 years.
He belonged to the Society of
American Florists, Rose s, Inc.,
Michigan State Florists Associa-
tion, Southeastern Michigan Flor-
ists Association and the Allied
Florists Association of Metropoli-
tan Detroit.
Surviving are his wife, Helen; a
son. J a c o b; a daughter, Delia
Hana.

Marvin Faber, 49

Marvin Faber, president of Fab-
er Industries and Acme Spring
Products, 2750 W. Fort, died June
1 at age 49.
Mr. Faber, 22160 Beverly, Oak
Park, was a member of Oak Park
Lodge of the Masons, Bnai Brith
and Hebrew Benevolent Society.
He was born in Detroit.
Survivors are his wife, Mollie; a
son, Howard; a daughter, Cherryl;
two brothers, Arthur and Seymour;
and a sister, Mrs. Sheldon (Laura)
Trosch.

SOLOMON N. ALPER of Miami
Beach died in Lisbon, Portugal,
May 20. Survived by a brother,
Dr. Abraham J. of Detroit; and
three sisters, Mrs. Max (Ida) Hy-
man and Mrs. Sylvia Stern, both
of Miami Beach, and Mrs. Rebecca
Finkelhor of Pittsburgh. Interment
Lisbon.
