`Churches of Holy Land'—Remarkable Work

For a full understanding of the
various religious elements in Is-
rael, it is vital that an important
new volume, "Churches of the Holy
Land," by Rev. Gerard Bushell,
be studied. Its contents offer
a full view of the Christian
settings in Israel, their history,
their functionaries, the roles some

had played in the process of Is-
rael's rebirth into statehood.
Published by Funk and Wagnalls,
this large volume is fully illus-
trated, with a number of multi-
colored pictures, many of the
churches, some of worshipers, sev-
eral of backgrounds.
The photographs are by a fa-
mous and very popular artist,
Anna Riwkin-Brick.
Father Bushell explains in his
introduction that in the Holy Land,
the "place of fermentation for
ideas, ideals and aspirations," men
and women "have changed their
own lives and those of their neigh-
bors, shaping the course of history
far beyond the country's borders
and leaving a legacy of the spirit
which will last for all time."
The churches listed and elabo-
rated upon are in various areas
and appear in Rev. Bushell's vol-
ume under these headings: "Naza-
reth, Mount Tabor, Churches of the
Lakeside (including those at Caper-
naum), Acre, Christian Shrines of
Carmel, Jaffa, the Negev, Avdat,
Kurnub, Jacob's Well, Jerusalem
and Bethlehem.

Regarding the Avdat setting, and
St. Theodore's Church, Rev. Bu-
shell makes the comment that: "At
Avdat, Christians have an unusual
link with fellow-worshipers of By-
zantine times. The site, almost un-
touched by vandals and amateur
explorers, yielded a rich treasure
of the past. For the restoration, we
are indebted especially to Prof. Avi-
Yonah of the Hebrew University
and to the generosity of Americans
who made it all possible through
the American Special Cultural Pro-
gram for Israel."
Acknowledgement also is made
of findings at Kutnub by Dr. A.
Negev of the Hebrew University.
Rev. Bushell takes occasion to
state in his section on the Holy
Sepulcher Basilica: "Our Judaeo-
Christian religion is not an ab-
straction devoid of color, move-
ment and location. It is a story

ors, some basic Jewish facts are
included in the analyses by Rev.
Bushell who states in his introduc-
tion:
"You will never appreciate the
Holy Land fully unless you believe
—and pray, be it ever so little.
This is not an ordinary country to
be 'done' by the tourist in two or
three days. This is the Holy Land,
and by the very definition of that
term, we must stand in awe at the
remarkable things that have hap-
pened and have been brought to
pass here ..."
"Churches of the Holy Land" is
a Christian book but it is not for
Christians alone. People of all
faiths, and especially Israel's Jew-
ish kinsmen, will be deeply inter-
ested in the splendid compilation
of facts by an eminent theologian.

Automation Age
Careers Outlined

Technological advances and the
merging new field of employment
are described in a thorough study,
"Careers in the Age of Automa-
tion," by June L. Aulick and Wil-
bur Cross.
Published by Hawthorn Books,
this volume, which contains valu-
able descriptive illustrations,
touches upon opportunities in the
professions, in politics, in indus-
tries.
The title of the opening chapter,
"Hitch Your Wagon to the Automa-
tion Star," gives an idea of the
approach interestingly made by
the two collaborating authors.
John Diebold, a pioneer in the
automation field, wrote the intro-
duction.

Because Grossinger's never let anything stand in his
way. When Louis Parez needed more room for his flowers
(he calls them his "babies"), we realigned our driveway.
And one time we even changed our building addition plans.
just to spare his young spruce trees.
We're glad we went out of our way for Louis Parez. His
brood makes Grossinger's a beautiful garden spot. You'll
love the countrified atmosphere, from our rustic dining
rooms with fresh flowers to the countless wooded paths
that lead to nowhere in particular.
And, if that isn't enough, there are 8 all-weather tennis
courts, an 18-hole championship golf course, indoor and
outdoor Olympic swimming pools, 2 health clubs, handball
and shuffleboard courts, and a mile-long lake to row on
and fish in.
