Gift by Feinberg
Boosts Library
Whitman Display
Nationwide interest is being
shown in the presentation made by
Detroiter Charles E. Feinberg of
his vast Walt Whitman collection
to the Library of Congress.
Marking the 150th anniversary of
Whitman's birthday, an exhibition
of the Whitman collection opened
May 30 at the library in Washing-
ton.
Feinberg, who was honored for
his presentation at the opening
of the exhibition; said: "Whit-
man always hoped his papers
would be at the Library of Con-
gress. He always hoped his work
would be read by the working
people."
It was announced in Washington
that Feinberg is giving part of his
collection to the Library of Con-
gress, that he has arranged for the
entire collection to go to the
library eventually, along with an
endowment fund which will enable
the library to buy other manu-
scripts and letters should they be-
come available after his death.
Feinberg, whose formal school-
ing ended when he was 12, ex-
plained that he is "a product of
the library." He had read about
Whitman in Canada where he was
brought up, and his task of collect-
ing Whitmania started when he
bought a Whitman letter.
He has been honored by many
universities, several conferred hon-
orary degrees upon him and he has
an honorary Phi Beta Kappa mem-
bership.

`Little Things' Viewed
as Path to Observance
Editor, The Jewish News:
It is not surprising that our
young people "drop out" or cease
of identify with Jewish teachings or
community. In the open society,
there are few cohesive forces to
retain their loyalty voluntarily.
And fortunately, there are few ex-
ternal rebuffs to force their in-
voluntary participation.
The situation is now ripe for the
rediscovery of the Sabbath. Re-
gardless of one's approach to posi-
tive Judaism—religious, sociocul-
tural, or pedagogical — everyone
will agree with the statement
made by Ahad Ha'Am some 80
years ago: ". . . more than Israel
has preserved the Sabbath, the
Sabbath preserved Israel."
The methods for rediscovering
the Sabbath, the approach for re-
capturing the Sabbath and mak-
ing it meaningful to us, will of
course depend on each individual
and each family. But sooner or
later the approaches will become
meaningful because they involve
simple and repetitious personal
commitments.

League Salutes
Jewish News' Role
Editor, The Jewish News:
With the closing of the year at
hand, I want to thank you for
your wonderful cooperation in
interpreting our program to the
Jewish community.
League represents 174 organ-
izations, as you are doubtless
aware and all of us (thousands
of women) take great pride in
the high journalistic excellence
of our Jewish News. It is more
than an instrument of informa-
tion; an institution to which
many look for guidance and in-
spiration.
We all know that this is no by-
product of accident, and we want
to pay special tribute to one of
your staff who, I am sure, is in-
strumental in the production of this
great newspaper. Mrs. Charlotte
Dubin would win loyal readers for
her integrity and conscientiousness
alone.
Add to this her fine handling of
our copy and many articles on mat-
ters of local human interest, and
it is easy to see why she has such
ardent fans—among them our pub-
licity chairman. Mrs. Louis P. Mil-
ler and myself . . . Therefore, we
want to extend our gratitude to
her, too.
