Talks, With Big 4 Aid Congressman William S. Broom- field (R-Royal Oak), told the Sha- arey Zedek Men's Club last week that the world "is only inviting a tragic replay of history" if it pres- sures Israel to withdraw from oc- cupied Arab territories without also insisting on a peace treaty signed by both sides. The major powers had an oppor- tunity following the Middle East war of 1956 to insist on such an agreement. Instead, they forced Israel to withdraw from Arab territory in the Sinai Desert with- out a signed peace agreement, he said. While insisting on direct ne- gotiations between Israel and the Arab states, Broomfield said he believes the Four Power talks on the Middle East at the United Nations can be a "positive and helpful force" in assisting the two parties in reaching an accord. Broomfield said the situation in the Middle East and the search for a meaningful disarmament agreement with the Soviet Union are equally as complex as Vietnam and almost as urgent. He commented that the shift from military to political issues in the Paris peace talks is an en- couraging sign the world is on the road to settlement in Vietnam. Broomfield, ranking Republican on the Far East subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, cautioned it may be a long, dif- ficult road and America will need all of the patience it can muster before a final peace is achieved.
