Rabbi Katz came to a small 1
Saginaw emigre-
! gation in 1951.
Under his leader-
ship, the congre-
I gation expanded,
outgrowing its in-
adequate qua r t-
ers, and moved
into the present
tem p 1 e building
in 1952. Its sanc-
tuary was added
n 1964.
Rabbi Katz
He leaves the temple with an
organized school program, youth
groups, active men's club, adult
Jewish education program and
Saturday afternoon oneg Shabat,
where temple members present
original papers on Jewish topics
or book reviews.

He was instrumental in the
formation of the Tri-City Jewish
War Veterans' Doran Goldfarb
Post, adult Hebrew classes, an
annual baccalaureate service for
Jewish high school graduates
and the annual Israel celebra-
tion.

During the rabbi's ministry at
Bnai Israel, a sanctuary, social
hall, classrooms and a library
housing 3,000 volumes on every
phase of Judaica was built. The
temple library on Judaica is the
largest in the state, outside of De-
troit.
Rabbi Katz is prominent in
interfaith work and civic affairs
of the community. He was a mem-
ber of the executive board of the
Saginaw Township Schools, when
it was in the process of formation,
and a member of the Saginaw
Civic Symphony Board.
His wife Ann has also been
active in civic and religious groups
in the community. A CPA by pro-
fession, she served on the finance
committee of the Saginaw YWCA
Committee of Concern, and is cur-
rently a member of the admissions
and budget committee of the Unit-
ed Fund.
They have one daughter, a
sophomore at Michigan State Univ-
ersity.
The congregation is planning a
testimonial dinner honoring Rabbi
Katz and his family June 22.
