Educator Blames Generation Gap on Parents

KIAMESHA LAKE, N.Y. (JTA)
—Dr. Morton Siegel, director of '
the education commission of the
United Synagogue of America, said
it is the failure of the home and
the parent that is responsible for
"today's generation gap."
Speaking at the annual conven-
tion of the National Federation of 1
Jewish Men's Clubs, Dr. Siegel
said that "many Jewish parents do
not apply a consistent pattern of a
Jewishness in their lives and thus
do not project an emulative exam-
ple."
Children want to imitate their
parents, he said, and when parents
do not project an affirmative and

consistent pattern, "especially on
the level of the ethical and the
moral," the child "will seek to
dissociate himself from the par-
ent's image, and in overcompensa-
tion for such dissociation, wed him-
self to the most extreme types of
rebellion."
Federation president Herman

C. Rothberg reported that over
90 per cent of the 375 member
clubs are working with Jewish
youth and participating in the
sponsorship of a variety of youth
programs.

Dr. Clifford Lord, president of
Hofstra University, paid tribute to

Still Time to Enroll

"This is a highly individualistic
generation, a generation that
wants to do its own thing. It is
a highly humanistic generation,
as witnessed by the fact that both
big businesses and government
have recruiting problems. On the
other hand, the Peace Corps,
Vista and Sherut La'am, among
Jews, have no recruiting prob-
lems. We must accept the fact
that this present generation is
not prepared to accept our
values and procedures, not ready
to conform unquestioningly."

awarded to a book on British
sculptor Henry Moore, published
by Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd.
of London.

Six of the greatest world auth-
orities on design served on the
jury which picked the book out
of 222 entries from 21 countries.

The prize, a sculpture by Israeli
Itzhak Danziger, will be awarded
by the Israel Museum Tuesday at
the inauguration of its new wing
housing the libraries of art and ,

archaeology and an auditorium—a

donation of Axel Springer. The
prize will be given to the publisher

and to Nicholas Jenkins, who de-
signed the book which had been 1
photographed by John Hedgecoe
and written by Henry Moore him-
self.
Four other books mentioned by

the jury as specifically outstand-
ing will be awarded the Israel
Museum silver medal.

All the books submitted for the
contest are being exhibited at the
Fourth Jerusalem International
Book Fair through March 27
and will then belong to the mu-
seum library. The award winning
books also will be shown at an ex-
hibition of fine books since the
Gutenberg Bible—at the museum.
The international jury was head-
ed by Dr. Willem Sandberg, for-
mer director of the Stedelijk Mu-
suem in Amsterdam and former
art adviser to the Israel Museum.
Earlier, the 1969 "Jerusalem
Prize" was awarded to Ignazio
Silone, Italian writer and critic.
The Jerusalem Prize is the only
official international Israeli prize,
and it is given by the municipality
of Jerusalem as a part of the In-
ternational Book Fair. The prize is
awarded to an author whose writ-
ings express the idea of "the free-
dom of the individual in society."
The prize was awarded to Silone
at the opening ceremony of the
Book Fair Wednesday.
