LETTER BOX :hiss Solomon Betrothed to Leona rd S. Krugel Prof. Rylaarsdam Clarifies Position Discussed in His Midrasha Lecture Editor, The Jewish News: Pastor Dennis Nordmoe, a good friend who was once my student • . has asked me to supplement ▪ . the report on my lecture, car- ried in The Jewish News. At the risk of compounding confusion, I'll make an attempt. At the very beginning of my lec- ture, I cited three ways in which Christians have persistently sought to state the difference between their faith and Judaism, to claim its superiority: 1—Love (vs. justice) as an ethic- al norm. 2—Universalism, the availability of the message of God's power and goodness to all men. 3—Law and Gospel, man's rela- tionship with God as demand or as grace. I rejected all three of these as providing a "key" to the differ- ence between our two faiths, both because they belie the facts about Jewish faith and because the key to the distinction lies elsewhere. Pastor Nordmoe's objection to your report involves No. 3. He is correct in his statement that I re- jected the traditional Law—Gospel antithesis as descriptive of the two faiths. What I said was that both in the Jewish Bible and in the Christian New Testament the de- mands of God upon man are al- ways made in the context of a setting in which God has already done, or is doing, what man can not do for himself. In both traditions, law is a gift precisely because its antecedent setting is God's mercy and re- H a w ii a n Honeymoon Follows Robinson Vows demption. I illustrated this by citing the opening words of the Decalogue: "I am the LORD thy God that brought thee up out of the land of Egypt . . ." I am painfully aware that Chris- tianity has always grossly mis- represented Judaism at this point, as at so many others. In a small way, I am trying to acknowledge the error by trying to find more honest ways of stating the differ- ence between the two faiths and the nature of their relationship. The main part of my lecture was pre- occupied with that concern. Though I am not the only Chris- tian theologian engaged in this critical and radical reassessment, it is still a pioneering venture. So, I am not at all surprised if, after nearly 2,000 years of a fixed pole- mical "line," Jewish ears do not at once register a new Christian ap- proach to this matter! That is especially the case in this instance, since I did not develop the issue at all but dealt with it very brief- ly, to set it aside as inadequate and unpromising as a way of deal- ing with my assigned topic, "How Christians Differ." I want to close by again express- ing my great appreciation for the opportunity you gave me at the Midrasha and to thank you for your gracious hospitality. Sincerely, J.
