Four U-M Profs Visit Israel, Prepare
English Language Training Program

A group of professors from the
University of Michigan is prepar-
ing a detailed plan of collaboration
with scholars at Israeli universities
for research and training in lan-
guage and language behavior.
The move follows a recent visit
to Israel by Profs. J. C. Catford,
A. Guiora, H. Lane, and Hayim
Paper to gather information and
consult with their colleagues on the
teaching of English in Israel.

Envisaged is a program which
may apply different disciplines,
such as general and applied lin-
guistics, psycholinguistics and
sociolinguistics, to the problems
of language teaching. Possible
areas of cooperation may include
the exchange of academic staff
and graduate students between
the University of Michigan and
Israeli institutions, joint research

projects and summer courses.

The visitors met with scholars
from the Hebrew University, Tel
Aviv and Bar-Han universities,
officials of the ministry of educa-
tion and culture, British and U.S.
foreign staffs and the Educational
Television Guest.
