Bar Kokhba Story
-
in Son of a Star

I

'

Simon Bar Kokhba, named Son
of a Star, by Israel's philosopher
Rabbi Akiba and chosen by him to
lead the Judean warrior bands
against the Romans, is a heroic
figure worthy of any age or people.
The story of the great uprising
which occurred between 132 and

135 CE is the material of epic
drama and author Andrew Meisels
has employed it authentically and
with considerable skill.

"Son of a Star," to be published
by G. P. Putnam's Sons June 30,
portrays the truly extraordinary
battle scenes which brought to-
gether classically-trained Roman
troops and Judean guerrillas led
by Simon. An unorthodox com-
mander, Simon was able to with-
stand overwhelming Roman su-
periority in numbers by deploying
his troops in strategic commando
raids and engagements worthy of

the great military commanders in
history. Only when victory was in
the air did he seriously risk defeat
by refusing to compromise with
the seemingly humbled Romans.
In "Son of a Star," the story has

been given new life.

Father's Day Gift
-Trees in Israel

The planting of trees as a tribute
to father on Father's Day, June
15, again is recommended by the
Jewish National Fund. Certificates,
bearing the names of those honor-
ed , (or memorialized) and the
names of the donors, will be mail-
ed to the honored fathers, or to the
relatives of those who are deceas-
ed.
David P. Zack, JNF president,
stated that "There is no more dig-
nified way of honoring father than
the planting of trees in. Israel. A
tree is a symbol of life. A grow-
ing tree is a living tribute to him."

Zack cited the importance of
trees to Israel's economy, con-
tinuing that "The trees planted,
in addition to serving as a sym-
bol of life, or as a perpetuation
of the memory of a loved one,
also help the state of Israel
greatly in its ever growing eco-
nomic structure,"

Certificates can now be ordered
froin the Jewish National Fund
office, 399-0820, or through JNF
tree chairmen of affiliated organ-

izations.
The JNF office, 22100 Green-
field, Oak Park, will be open 10
a.m.-2 p.m. June 15, for the con-
venience of those who may want
to pick up certificates on-their way
to visit with their fathers: '
