Bedtime on Bet Shean Kibutz: Deep Underground

Ernest Weekley's Etymological Dictionary
If Ernest Weekley had prepared
his splendid two-volume "An Ety-
mological Dictionary of Modern
English" in this generation he un-
doubtedly would have made many
changes.
For instance, in explaining "He-
brew" he wrote more than half a
century ago: "As vernacular lan-
guage Hebrew became extinct
three of four centuries BC, being
replaced by kindred Aramaic or
Syriac, It survived, like Sanskrit,
as liturgical language."
The fact is that scholars still
used Hebrew as their language and
only the masses resorted to Ara-
maic.
In our time Hebrew became a
living language again and Week-
ley would surely have noted it.

The Weekley volumes remain
among the classics in their field
and in considering dictionaries and
the origin of words there are few
studies as valuable as this.
An introductory biographical me-

Ernest Weekley, adds value to an
understanding of the significant
work issued by paperbacks by
