What is the meaning of the
name "Shavuot" as applied to
the Jewish festival which bears
this name?
There are at least three deriva-
tions for this name. The literal
meaning as it is used in the Bible
in connection with setting The date
for this holiday is "weeks." In this
respect, the term would recall that
the festival of Shavuot is one which
is always dated as being seven
"weeks" after the first day of
Passover. Unlike the other hell
days, the Bible does not cite a spe-
cific day of the month as the date
Of this festival. It only records that
the day of the festival is arrived at
by counting a period of seven
weeks.
Another derivation of this word
would be that it constitutes the
Hebrew expression for the number
"seven." Some mystic sources in-
dicate that the number seven im-
plies a spirit of holiness. Since the
period of time between the first
day of Passover and the Shavuot
holiday is calculated as seven
weeks, the number of weeks in
itself is a reference to the holiness
of the period. A third derivation of
this term relates it to the Hebrew
word for "vow." This might refer
to the contention that vows were
taken by the people of Israel when
they were at the foot of Mount
Sinai at the period of the revela-
tion—an event which this holiday
commemorates.
