THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 20—Friday, May 23, 1969 Neal Walk Runs to Phoenix Suns By JESS SILVER (Copyright, 1969, JTA, Inc.) The United States Maccabia Games basketball squad lost its top prospect when Neal Walk struck gold in Arizona. The big center from Miami Beach and the University of Florida signed a three-year - upper-six-figure agree- ment with a no-cut clause" to pity for the Phoenix Suns of the Na- tional Basketball Association. A second and third team All- America selection, Walk was a second round draft choice of bo:h the American Basketball Associa- tion and the NBA. Neal chose the older league in order to play Rights Unit Asks Apology From Columbia Journal for Article Called Biased NEW YORK (JTA)—The New York City Commission on Human Rights called on Columbia Col- lege and tlie college alumni pub- lication. Columbia Today, to apolo- gize publicly for an article in its spring 1968 issue on the student revolt at Columbia which the com- mission said was either "a delib- erate attempt on the part of the author to invoke an anti-Semitic response" or revealed that the author was "astonishingly naive about the way in which the poison of anti-Semitism spreads." The article, written by George C. Keller, editor of the maga- zine, said that nearly all of the leaders and many of the mem- bers of the Students for a Demo- cratic Society at Columbia were Jewish and noted that the fam- ily name of Mark Rudd, then SDS chairman, "originally was Rudnitsky." The commission, which reached a unanimous decision condemning the magazine for the article, acted on complaint of Paul O'Dwyer who accused the magazine of anti- Semitism. Keller, who subse- quently resigned to become a spe- cial assistant to the president of the State University of New York. denied the charge. The commission noted that the magazine was protected from le- gal action under the First Amend- ment but declared it would use the ' - sanction of public disapproval" to protest against a - shabby exer- cise in bigotry." Some reports ABA's Cougars made him a still more lucrative offer to play in North Carolina. Why the Miami Beach-based Miami Floridians of the ABA didn't go all-out to land the hometown boy remains a mystery. It could turn out to be as big a goof as the New York Knickerbockers letting Adolph Schayes go to the Syracuse Nationals for an extra S500. The present supervisor of officials in the NBA, Schayes went on to be- come a perennial league all-star and thorn in the side of numerous Knick teams. Roy Rubin, varsity basketball coach and athletic director of Long Island University, has been named special United States Maccabia basketball adviser. The appointment was announced by Sol Leiber of New York, basket- ball chairman of the United States Committee Sports for Israel. the organization which sponsors USA participation in the World Macca- bia Games. The eighth games will be held in Israel July 28-Aug. 7. Rhode Island's Jewish Governor By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER (A Seven Arts Feature) The new governor of Rhode Island is the vice president of his shill. Judge Frank Licht, a Democrat rode out the Nixon tide and ousted his opponent, the former encum- bent. Tiniest of all states in territory, Rhode Island exceeds many others in population and has a record of liberalism which goes all the way back to Roger Williams. In the state capitol of Rhode Island you will find a large plaque saluting the Jews who came to this country in 1654. Judge Licht is, of course, not the first Jewish chief executive of an American state. New York, Illinois and Oregon are among the states who have had Jewish governors. Judge Licht is of that breed of Jewish public serrants who are comfortable in their Jewish- ness. Not all have been. Bran- deis. Lilienthal and Fortas are officials whose appointment to high office evoked opposition by anti-Semites, but none of those three men enjoyed their Jewishness. Of course Brandeis was a Zionist, but he wasn't 7111101 of a Jew. His Zionism was patronizing, something like Lord Balfour's. There was a time when many offi- cials of the Jewish faith were most self-conscious of their identity and played it down. Even Frankfurter, also regarded as a Zionist, thought little of Judaism. Asked once whe- ther his Jewishness was a force in his life, he refused to answer and. great though he was, Frankfurter was almost juvenile when he said once that he soured on Judaism because of one experience as a youngster at a service he didn't like. Sen. Gruening, who just lost his Senate seat, is also often re- ferred to as Jewish, but he would rather not have that appelation (Jewish ). Judge Licht is another type. Like Jarits. Goldberg and Ribi- coff. he exults in his Jewishness. His spiritual leader. Rabbi Eli Bohnen. of Providence's Temple EinanwEl has nahas from him. and rice versa. The gorernor.was a Zionist from his youth and has been active in everything Jew- ish (as lie has ben in a host of general endavors.) Indeed Judge Licht's synagoge is full of the new brand of prominent Jews. Its membership includes a supreme court justice of the state, two district judges, the police com- missioner of Providence, the adju- tant general of the state national guard, and the present superintend- ! ent of the Providence school system. Nixon urging him not to repeat the "mistake" made in 1957 when the United States and the Soviet Union compelled Israel to withdraw from the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip from which Israel had ousted Egypt in the 1956 Sinai campaign. The re- port appeared in the usually well- informed afternoon daily. Maariv. There was no confirmation or denial from the premier's office. 60. Participant in the developmental career guidance project of the col- lege of education of Wayne State University, Weisz served as vice president of Hillel Day School and will be president-elect as of May 29. He is a member of the com- munity relations committee of the Jewish Community Council. According to Maariv. Mrs. Meir reminded Nixon. who was Presi- dent Dwight D. Eisenhower's vice president at the time. that as a result of the action of the super- powers, the explosive situation that had prevailed prior to the Sinai campaign had been restored. This soon became active belli- gerence between Israel and the Atab states and this. in turn. led to another war. OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS The CARIBE MOTEL PROVIDES YOUR WITH .. .
