telephoned, I was told that no per-

expressed my disappointment, a
female voice on the other side of
the line said 'There are too marry

Drabkin went on to say that
This was probably the voice of

He then asked President Podgorny
if this was an expression of gov-

letter with the statement: "I am
thus kept forcibly here and threat-
ened with destruction of myself and
my family. I can no longer con-
sider myself, therefore, a citizen. of

a citizen of the Jewish state of
Israel."
In Washington, a new anti-
Semitic book by Ukrainian author
Trofim Kichko, published with
apparent official sanction in the
Soviet Union. was sharply criti-
cized in Congress and by a lead-
ing Washington newspaper.
The new work, "Judaism and
Zionism." last week was described
by the Academic Committee on
Soviet Jewry as equal in anti-
Semitic slurs to Kichko's first book,
"Judaism Without Embellish-
ment."
Rep. Thomas M. Petty, Wash-

House statement Kichko's new
book as an "example of the cam

The editorial also saw a link be-
tween the Mid East deadlock and
approved publication of the new
Kichko book. "Kichko sees the
state of Israel as embodying what
he calls the vengeful and destruc-
tive nature of the 'God of the
Jews.' " The editorial added that
"as the Middle East hovers on the
edge of a new war, as conversa-
tions continue about the interven-
tion of the major powers, it is
deeply distressing that the Soviet
state should see fit to present such
tired old travesties of thought as
Kichko's."

The treatment of Jews in the
Soviet Union will be brought to
the attention of the United Na-
t-ons, other international bodies
and the national parliaments of
the 18 nations represented in the
Council of Europe in accordance
with a series of resolutions
adopted in Strasbourg by the
council's plenary assembly.

Where Was Israel
at Milan Fair?

By JULIO DRESNER

(Copyright. 1969, JTA, Inc.)

ROME — Israel, which imported
855.000.000 in Italian goods in 1968 ,
but sold Italy only $10,000,000
worth of Israeli products, has
missed a good chance to narrow
the wide trade gap.
Israel's participation in the Milan
International Trade Fair was token
and perfunctory. The fair drew
3,500.000 visitors and reached mil-
lions more through daily television
coverage. But Israel was repre-
sented by a small information stall
in the Palace of Nations and noth-
ing on the vast fair grounds out-
side.
Instead of proud displays of Is-
rael's industrial and artistic output
for prospective buyers to admire,
Israel dispensed a catalogue of
what was available.
Instead of free samples of wines,
juices, meats, cheeses and a thou-

sand-and-one other edibles with
which the representatives of more
than 70 nations plied the visitors,
Israel contented itself with pretty
posters depicting it as "a link be-
tween continents."

Most important, Israel missed
out on the main business of a
trade fair which is to collar pros-
pective buyers and take orders
"off the floor." The information
booth was staffed by one person
who obviously couldn't leave his
post and was clearly not expert.
in all branches of Israel's econ-
omy.
Israel has held some pretty im-
pressive international trade fairs
on its own soil. Last year it turned
up at the agricultural fair in Ver-
ona and the fair in Bari with fine
displays, though both are provin-
cial cities compared to Milan. One
wonders what happened to Milan.
