THREE YEARS AGO while in
Israel, Libbie Dussalt planted a
tree through the Jewish National
Fund honoring Mary Kreger,
whose stand at the Broadway Mar-
ket is a city landmark . . . Last
week, the JNF was informed by
Libbie that Mrs. Kreger had sent
her $25 to plant 10 trees next to
the one that Libbie had planted
in her honor.
CALLING JOE SLATKIN . . .
Remember back in 1955 when you
were discouraged at not hooking a
single fish at the late Max Han-
dler's summer home on Burt Lake?
. All was not lost, though . . .
You did get one later ... and with
a golf club you had borrowed from
Max ... Spending a while on prac-
tice swings after the discouraging
day of fishing, you heard some
sounds from the nearby lake, went
over and saw something splashing
around . . . You swung hard and
hit what turned out to be a four-
pound bass . . . your only catch of
the day . . . (For fishermen who
also like to golf, or vice versa, Joe
used a number 9 iron.)
WHILE ON VACATION, Sol and
Evelyn Rhodes visited Mexico City
. . . and had their dream come
true . . . to someday attend a bull
fight . . . It was more a dream of
Sol's than of Evelyn's ... But like
any good wife, his wants soon be-
came hers . . . At the arena, the
fight had reached the point where
the matador, armed with a swirl-
ing cape, was taunting the bull .. .
Each time the bull charged, the
matador would flip the cape aside
. . . An old cowboy became dis-
gusted . . . Finally he shouted,
"Hey, buddy, he ain't never gonna
run into that there sack unless you
hold it still!"
REACHING FOR THE pie plate
on the table, little Bobby Cohen, 9-
year-old son of Lucille and Lowell
Cohen, was asked by his mother
why he always reached for the
biggest piece . . . and if he didn't
think his older brother, Howard,
ought to have it . . . "I should say
not," said Bobby as he scooped up
the piece in question. "He was eat-
ing pie five years before I was
born."
SEEING SIGNS . . . by George
Haar, who reports this one hung
up by a nearby junk dealer at a
railroad crossing: "Go Ahead.
Take a Chance. We'll Buy The
Car."
WHILE AT METROPOLITAN
Airport recently, Judge Marvin
Frankel of Oak Park noticed a
young acquaintance of his feeding
money into the machine that auto-
matically issues insurance policies
. . . Staring at the fistful of po-
licies, Mary exclaimed that be
really must be afraid of planes ...
and the young fellow replied,
"Naaa, I always do this when I
fly. I send an insurance policy to
each of my girl friends, listing her
as my sole heir and, MAN, you'd
be surprised how that succeeds in
cementing relations!"

one hit record (with different
