Beth Hillel Dinner to Toast Israel

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
24—Friday, May 16, 1969

The idea that every congregation
in Detroit should organize a tour
of Israel among its members was
endorsed by the Rabbinical Corn-
mission of the Jewish Community
Council at its May meeting.
Uzi Michaeli, director of the
Midwest Bureau of the Israel Gov-
ernment Ministry of Tourism, in-
formed that travel to Israel was
on the increase.
"However," said Michaeli, "since
tourism has become Israel's num-
ber one industry and its principal
source of dollars, it is essential
that Jews in America, who have
been demonstrating their love for
Israel by way of contributions,
shall also express their devotion
by coming to Israel in person."
Reuven Goldstein, the represen-
tative in Detroit of El Al Israel
Airlines, told the rabbis that
neither the guerrilla attempts in
Israel, nor those on El Al, had in
any way deterred either Jewish
or Gentile travelers. He pointed
out that Israel has its high season
as well as its "off" season. In the
"off season" both plane rates and
hotel rates are greatly reduced.
He advocated the arrangements of
tours for the fall and winter when
the costs would fit modest budgets.
