He was acquitted by a judge
who declared that Father Trioni's
sermon could easily have been
viewed as an attempt to legiti-
matize acts of anti-Semitism
from the massacres of Jews in
the Middle Ages to the Nazi
slaughters of modern times.
The judge pointed out that the
charge of deicide directly contra-
dicted a Vatican Council declara-
tion absolving the Jewish people of
all guilt for the crucifixion and de-
clared that it deviated so far from
human ethics and the Church's
commands, that a public outburst
against it was not -unjustified.

The criticism was expressed in
a letter from Michele Cardinal
Pellegrino, the archbishop of
Turin, to Father Ernesto Balducci
of Rome. It was intended for
use in ilitt'ilefense of Fabririi,
dled at such centers.
Cardinal Pellegrino wrote his
The Jew seeking advancement in
letter two weeks before the trial.
In it he said he was amazed that
a high judicial officer, in an ap-
peal against an acquittal, saw fit
to inject theological matters and
base an indictment on his own
conclusions. He said it was "absurd
and grotesque" to read a judicial
writ that misquoted and misused
Biblical passages for the express '
purpose of contradicting the "letter
and the spirit" of the Declaration
on the Jews. The letter was offered
in Fabrini's defense but he de-
clined to have it used in court.
Fabrini had shouted "buffoon" I
at the priest, Rev. Riziero Trioni
and accused him of voicing racial,
Nazi concepts during the sermon.

Father Trioni subsequently had a

But his rector brought charges
against Fabrini.

ANTWERP (JTA) — The Euro-
pean Executive of the World Jew-
ish Congress condemned the Soviet
Union for its anti-Zionist propa-
ganda campaign which it said had
overtones of anti-Semitism that
created a "climate of hostility" for
the Jews in the Soviet Union.
Winding up its session, the execu-
tive also protested the failure of
the Soviet Government to remove
the disabilities suffered by Jewish
citizens who are not given the
same oportunities to develop their
religious and cultural rights that
other national minorities enjoy.
The resolution also urged that So-
viet Jews be given the right to
