THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 20—Friday, May 16, 1969 Jews Outside Israel Face Extinction, Renowned Canadian Poet Warns By MICHAEL M. SOLOMON (Copyright, 1955, JTA MONTREAL—Irving Layton is a Canadian-Jewish poet who has won an important niche in Canada's literary pantheon. Most of his work, in English, breathes with the effervescent life of Montreal's Jewish ghetto of a generation ago. That ghetto has long gone, and its denizens have migrated to the suburbs and mid- dle-class affluence. Layton will depart shortly too. He gives up Montreal's Sir George William University after 20 years for a chair in English literature at York University in Toronto. stronghold of Canadian Anglo- Saxonism with a late Victorian tinge. He speaks with the sadness of nostalgia of this city where he ar-; rived 53 years ago as an immigrant ' child from Romania. He recalls I the Jewish immigrant milieu which spawned much of his poetry ' and that of others like A. M. Klein and Leonard Cohen. Layton, author of 22 books and many times recipient of national literary awards, firmly be- lieves that Diaspora Jewry is doomed. It will be swallowed up, he declared, either by the Gen- tiles or by Israel. "Those who have cut their connections with Judaism will soon melt into the surrounding non-J e w i s h sea while those who remain faithful to Jewish traditions will sooner or later be absorbed by Israel." The latter eventuality does not disturb him in the least. Layton is passionately devoted to Israel, which he considers the repository of "the basic values of Judaism" destined to "educate" the rest of world Jewry. The young generation is a puzzle and source of anger for this poet. And so are many Jewish intellec- tuals who, he says, "have swallow- ed the Moscow line on Israeli im- perialism, hook, line and sickle. My contempt is greater for them than for the masters who put the baited hook in their gullets." "What angers me," he said. "is the great excitement young Jews display for Cuba when as Jews they should be attracted by the progressive and democratic achievements of Israel." Yet he understands their alienation from a "bourgeoisie they consider sick and rotten. They specifically repudiate their parents and together with them, the whole middle class establishment including Israel," he said. The poet thinks there must be changes in the emphasis and con- tent of Jewish education today if Judaism is to woo its young away from "such vicious foreign myths as Stalinism, Maoism and Castroism." Modern Jewish edu- cation, he said, "must jettison archaic Orthodoxy" if the young are to be prevented from turn- ing their backs to it. The state of Israel. He defined the latter as "devotion to humanity, repudiation of complacency, arrogance, power. idolatry and anything that destroys human dignity. That is the Heb- raic contribution to world culture." he said. Israel's 1st Clinical Psychologist Probes Children's Anxieties MIRIAM GOLDWASSER "Ruth is 14 years old.
